I'm taking plain ole everyday magnesium supplements. I take 500mg of magnesium at night. I think it helps stop the grinding of my teeth. I wear a night guard of hard material at night because I have bruxism to the extreme. My teeth are a mess and I have to stop grinding. Do you think Magnesium helps and I'm taking sufficient amounts? I'm concerned about my teeth. Dorothy

How much total magnesium are you taking? Too much magnesium acts as a laxative. I take 300 mg per day, divided up as 100 mg after each of three meals.

I was taking 300 mgs of Mag at night. I've had to stop it since I started getting D again...now having Leg cramps in the morning. I don't take much calcium at all. Look up Dr. Berg on Youtube and he talks a lot about Calcium and Magnesium. It all goes over my head. I was taking Mag Glycinate...never gave me D but having to stop it for now. Citrate has a laxative effect.

Someone referenced Almond Milk...that has Calcium carbonate in it...not the best source since it depletes stomach acid and that causes another host of issues.

Good idea to space out the Mag...think I will try that once I start back up. Digestion is now getting sluggish again. Can't find the happy medium!

I'm on a very restricted diet and still having D (soupy D instead of WD and only 1 or 2 times a day in the morning - so I have improved greatly since I was at my worst last February.) I've tried Ancient Minerals mag oil - two squirts on my thighs. Recently tried ReMag - 1/8 teas. in water and sipped throughout the day. Both caused the WD to return. Do I need to just wait longer get started on mag or is there another way that may work?

HI Carol,

I would stick to at least 3-6 teaspoons magnesium lotion a day anywhere your body will allow it. As long as you are taking Vitd3 it will absorb. It may just be that you need the larger end dose of both Magnesium and VitD for a few months. Do you know your VitD levels, if they are hovering around the 80's then you just need more magnesium absorbing into the body and not more VitD.

I would not take any Magnesium internally until your body moves away from any D. You'll do fine with external Magnesium while healing.

Erica,
Thank you so much for your quick reply. I will continue to try the magnesium oil, but it really increases the WD. Not sure I can handle it. Maybe if I just put a small amount on each day and build up, it will work better. I forgot to mention in earlier post that I tried Epsom salts bath and it also caused WD. (The WD was significant, but don't know if it was all from the Epsom salts or if part of it was the homemade sauerkraut brine - 1/2 teas. - that caused the problem.) I should be more careful about trying new things - did the Epsom salts in the evening and the sauerkraut brine the next day, but I'm in a bit of a flare right now anyway, so maybe just need to back off everything until I get back to where I was a month ago.
I appreciate your posts from your healing journey and will go back and review them again. Feeling a little down and out right now.

I agree. Flares can be mighty tough to break out of. I think that if I were in your shoes I wouldn't be adding anything at this point. At least not until I were in a much better position.

HI Carol,
Don't be hard on yourself.... ;-)

I would stick with safe, minimal foods...no citric acid, no extra sugars, no fiber, no extra fats....just protein and safe starchy veggies with a little sea salt for flavor...

It may take a few days to a couple weeks, but if you stick with low invasive foods and liquids and just keep the magnesium on the outside of the body it will not affect the lining of the intestines so I really don't feel it could be causing any WD or D for you, only things you introduce into the intestines will make cause for upset, including hormones and stressing feelings.

Water...of all things upset my intestines so I had to get creative...add a little sea salt, warm it up....drink a bit of coffee perhaps....ironically we become low on electrolytes during flares....so potassium, sodium, manganese, magnesium and molybdenum may be fairly low which affects our adrenal glands too. Amazing what kind of balance we need in the gut and how bad we can feel when we upset that balance.

Be kind to your self and give yourself as much time as it takes to relax and let the stress of this go....it will get better.

I get WD from topical Magnesium taking 'recommended' dosage (tried two different brands-- still have them and may try MUCH SMALLER amounts once I get my Vit D supplement in. Just wanted you to know you're not the only one that reacts to topical Mag

I have stopped taking oral supplements since I understand that they are basically not doing anything for me while my microscopic colitis is active. I have been reading here that you can get the magnesium from oils or lotions, but what brand (is Ancient Minerals a good one) and how much do you spray on? Regarding D3, how do you take that? What brand and how much. Is that topical as well? Judi

Hi Judi,

Yes, Ancient Minerals is a good brand. There are some cheaper ones that seem to work just as well. It takes a fair amount to be effective. It's been so long since I used any topical magnesium that I don't remember the dose instructions. They should be on the label. They might also be somewhere in this long thread.

Most people take 3,000–5,000 IU of oral magnesium. Doctors Best is a popular brand, but there are other safe brands available. Just be sure to check the label for inactive ingredients that cause many of us to react. The farther north you live, the more vitamin D you probably need. The only topical vitamin D3 I'm aware of is transdermal patches. They seem to work well, but they're much more expensive than any oral supplements, so most people only use them if they can't tolerate oral vitamins.

Hi Judi....I have used Life -flo Mag lotion and found it to be reasonable in cost at vitacost.com I also really like ReMag by drcarolyndean.com and both lotions a heaping teaspoon will give you around 150mg of magnesium. It really does work wonders on my calves and feet when I get cramps 😉 I know I’m low on Mag when that happens 👍🏻 I live in the Pacific Northwest and take 6000 iu VitD3 every day with around 300 mg of mag these days. I used to have to bump all that up when I was beginning my healing journey.

I’m just checking...my magnesium supplement has 120 mg per capsule. What is that in IU?
I’m only taking 2 per day....and I’m still trying to figure out why I’ve developed ocular migraines the last few months.
