Anybody pursued Functional Medicine? I'm side-eyeing my doc.

Post by cantankerous sparrow »

Hi again,

Today I went and saw a functional medicine doctor (she is a DO), in regards to treating my still raging anxiety and OCD. I am no longer taking an SSRI due to undesirable side effects, and so y symptoms are getting pretty intense. I am hoping to treat this in a more natural means through diet and supplements if possible, hence my appointment with the D.O. today. Here's where I'm side-eyeing this lady....

She wants me to drink celery juice every morning on an empty stomach.

I've done some research since, and this seems to be the new diet craze. There are many people out there saying that drinking this "miracle juice" changed their life, but there are also just as many saying it's nothing more than snake oil. Most people are saying that drinking this every morning has given them diarrhea due to celery's diuretic effects.

I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on this? I certainly don't want to do something that's going to make my already existent WD worse! I understand her approach...fix the gut, fix the mind, but I'm wondering if this is a stretch. Any help? Have you tried celery juice? Thanks in advance!!

I have not had the nerve to try celery juice, even though it sounds like it is exactly what we all need. I keep seeing the info on it and wondering, but since everything gives me WD, I'll have to wait for a better time. I'm really anxious to hear what other people may have to say on the subject.

Hopefully, you'll get some responses from members who have actually tried this. If not, my opinion is stated in the thread from a year ago at the following link:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I haven't tried celery juice.

I got some good help from Dr. Gabrielle Hodson, at Hodson Custom Diets. She has a PhD in nutrition, and has actually heard of microscopic colitis. I got help from her getting off an antidepressant, which I went on when I couldn't take hormones any more. She was very helpful. I didn't follow all of her diet plan for MC, since my MC was already under control, but she helped get me off the medication slowly, replacing it with an herbal supplement which did not exacerbate my MC.

You can google her, if you want. She lives in Utah, but consults long distance.
