Chiropractic and Massage

Post by kariswalstad »

Hello! I have gone to a chiropractor and had massages for many years, and thought they'd helped, but now I'm starting to wonder. Having changed my diet for the past couple months and seeing more improvement than ever before, it seems that getting adjusted and/or massaged makes things worse for the next couple days. I'd had very little physical pain for the past week but got adjusted yesterday and by evening, could hardly sit in my recliner. Woke up today feeling hit by a truck.

(I will qualify this with the fact that when I have more emotional pain, the physical pain politely goes on the back burner for the most part...not sure which is worse! Still dealing with hormone adjustments, and damn tired of the myriad of symptoms MC causes!)

How do you folks feel about chiro and massage? I think it would be logical to suspend these for a while. Thank you!
Karis

Hi Kari,

I have used and will continue to use chiropractic, but only when I have a specific problem like lower back pain. I think chiropractors can be very helpful but I have found that there can be quite a bit of difference in chiropractic techniques. Recently, I switched chiropractors and my new chiropractor takes more of a holistic whole body approach and seems to be much better matched to my needs.

As for massage, I have a one hour "deep tissue massage" every month from a very experienced massage therapist. I have these massages religiously every month and I have almost immediate physical improvement after them. I have a chronic pain condition which is one of the main reasons for getting these massages. My belief is that massage is generally beneficial for the human body and while more popular than it used to be, is still undervalued as a therapy for many conditions. Again, experience and technique vary greatly with massage therapists. You have to find one that you trust and that clearly provides benefits to you.

Neither chiropractor or massage seems to have had any effect on my GI/Colitis; if anything maybe slightly positive as both therapies have a positive effect on my overall health. But if you see a direct negative cause and effect in either/both of these therapies, I think it would make some sense to suspend and see if suspension stabilizes your condition. Maybe try suspending one at a time as doing more than one thing at a time makes it more difficult to figure out which is negatively contributing. What type of massage technique does your therapist use? Just brainstorming; maybe avoiding the GI area during massage also might be helpful.

All the best.....I'm in Minnesota too; just trying to warm up after this recent cold snap!

Hi Karis,
I'm a strong proponent of massage and have had monthly maintenance sessions for years, as I feel it has helped me in ongoing quest to remain physically, emotionally and mentally balanced. I was wary of chiropractic work but several years ago tried it for an injury and since have been a faithful fan, now also going for monthly maintenance appointments. Both I feel help me tremendously, but in the acute phases of fatigue, illness, or flares of any sort, they can potentially 'stir things up' a bit.
Things can get worse before they get better, so to speak and muscle pain, exhaustion, etc. can seem to increase the very next day for me. If I ride it out, drink a lot of water and rest, eat well and remain positive, most often I feel much better in a short while and the major benefits emerge.

For myself, when I first was diagnosed with CC and was feeling so ill, losing weight and struggling to eat, I had massive fluid and electrolyte shifts that took months to correct. My overall health, plus shifting my diet really put my body through a transition and those states most always also include releasing toxins, etc. (which contribute to the malaise and also pain).
Any bodywork during this time was more intense for me and the after-effects were increased, regarding soreness and fatigue.
I will say that if anything though, it helped my GI symptoms by relaxing and calming my system, toning down the adrenaline response and helping to restore more restful sleep patterns.
If your sessions are increasing your MC, it would make sense to talk to your therapist/ chiropractor and mention your issues-- perhaps consider cutting back for a time period, or ask for a really gentle/ mild approach.
The biggest insults/ triggers for my MC symptoms have been stress, lack of sleep, fiber and veering away from the 'healing diet' plan.
Hope you continue to find answers on this journey and feel better every day!

Hello. I don't go to a chiropractor, but I soo0 enjoy a massage. I did experience stomach burning the day after a massage a while back and I think it might have been the oil that she used. The last time I went we discussed ahead of time the oil that she would be using (ingredients) and I was fine. I sleep so much better after a massage.

I appreciate you all so much. Thank you for taking time to share your experience. My last couple massages were really gentle so I think I’ll take a little time off and try again. I am just beginning to understand how deeply every little thing contributes to our illness and recovery; I had no idea. It makes me realize just how sick I’d been and that I wasn’t just being a baby (I was the only one accusing myself of that...). Thanks again and I wish you all well!

While I don't get chiropractic care, I do get a regular deep tissue massage, sometimes every other week. I have found no negative impacts on my colitis and the positive effects for me are significant. I broke my neck several years ago being bucked off a horse and carry a great deal of tension in my neck and shoulders and find an almost instant relief after having a deep tissue massage.

I do both..........chirorpractic and massage.............I go to the chiropractor every 3 weeks and wouldn't be able to function without him. Mine is wonderful and I've had no issues at all!

I recently started going back to my chiro....and I feel it has helped me strengthen areas that have been neglected and also I feel manipulation either chiro or massage also moves our lymph nodes around so we detox a bit after a visit. I'm kinda going about every 3 weeks as well...I should be able to lengthen that at some point I'm sure.
