Post by Ares »

because of gastric reflux I suffer from cough pharyngitis every month for months, and I am forced to use antibiotics, you can tell me if cefpodoxime proxatil can cause worse reactions or damage to microscopic colitis and to the digestive system

Diarrhea is a listed frequent side effect of that antibiotic. I have no idea of whether it might cause damage to the digestive system, but it's likely that it might trigger an MC reaction.

so all antibiotics are not a good thing for the MC !!? but I don't know any other methods to cure chronic winter pharyngitis, I thought gargles with water and apple vinegar, I also didn't understand if it is good or bad for a basic and acid discourse of the body and for a fact that it is a fermented product !

The only class of antibiotics that don't trigger MC are the fluoroquinolones. I use Ciprofloxacin (commonly called Cipro) whenever I need an antibiotic. It has never triggered an MC reaction for anyone — in fact it will usually stop a reaction. But Cipro has many "black box" warnings on the label about possible serious side effects.

Most members here who are prone to developing sinus infections, use a neti pot regularly.

I'm not telling you what to use, I'm just telling you what won't cause an MC reaction. Use whatever you want to use.

Tex,
I used doxycycline successfully last year for a tick born disease.
Is it a fluoroquinolone?

Hi Linda,

Good to hear from you. That's not a fluoroquinolone, so you must be in pretty solid remission if that long antibiotic treatment didn't cause a flare. Isn't that the one Polly blames her MC on? I'm thinking she took that or something similar.

I have to take amoxicillin the day I have dental work. I have a flare up of MC probably made worse 2 weeks ago from a previous dose of amoxicillin for dental work. I am scared about what will happen after this second dose of amoxicillin. Has anyone had this experience?

Hi,
welcome to the group. Amoxicillin is notorious for causing diarrhea. Most of us have much better luck using azithromycin (Z-pack). Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is another safe choice, but only use it if you have adequate magnesium reserves, because you are at risk of the black box warnings if you have a magnesium deficiency.

I will be starting Budesonide tomorrow and I am rescheduling my dental appointment until I have the MC somewhat under control. I am afraid to take another one time dose of Amoxicillin right now. I will check if Cipro is an option for the dental work. Thank you.

I survived taking Amoxicillin prior to my dental appointment. My doctor would not prescribe any different antibiotic. I decided to see a new gastroenterologist and now very confused. I was in remission from CM for 2 years. In April I had all the symptoms re-occur. My Personal Physician prescribed the Budesonide but urged me to see a specialist. End result is the Gastro doctor gave me all the standard tests (all negative). He included an X-ray since he thought I had a blockage???. Because the calprotectin came bake normal he said it is not the MC. He suggested PT to strengthen my muscles and Citrucel for more fiber. He told me not to take Pepto ( I only take when nauseous). He told me if I am still having issues and in 6 months I will need another colonoscopy. I am in my 3month of budesonide 3mg a day and while better I am still experiencing issues. I feel that he is dismissing my MC and I am at a loss. He would not recommend food sensitivity tests and said he did not believe food made any difference. He said my MC should have gone away right away with the Budesonide.

It appears that your gastroenterologist is lost, and knows very little about microscopic colitis. First off, calprotectin levels are not always elevated when microscopic colitis is active. Published medical research shows that it's capable of detecting active microscopic colitis with a sensitivity of about 67%. That implies that in about 1/3 of MC cases, a calprotectin test will fail to detect MC. It's more useful for detecting Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Secondly, fiber is contraindicated for most MC patients, because it usually makes our symptoms worse. Why on earth would he advise you not to take Pepto-Bismol? Is he afraid that it might help to stop the diarrhea? Another colonoscopy will do absolutely no good. It will show that you have only microscopic colitis. And as we all know, food has everything to do with MC.

Additionally, you mentioned that you're on your third months of taking 3 mg of budesonide per day. If you started a budesonide treatment using 3 mg per day, rather than the labeled 9 mg dose per day, your gastroenterologist apparently knows very little about treating IBD patients with corticosteroids. It's always necessary to begin the treatment with the full labeled dose. Starting a treatment at the minimum dose level is rarely effective. if you're going to depend on a gastroenterologist for treating your MC, you desperately need to find one who understands MC, and how to treat the disease.

At least that's my opinion, but as you're surely aware, I'm not a doctor.

Thank you Tex, I did take the normal course of the Budesonide starting with 9mg the first month. Sorry I was not clear in my message. My regular physician prescribed the Budesonide but asked me to see a gastroenterologist. I did take one citrucel caplet for 3 days now with no bad effects. I am very thankful for this site and the help of the information from others who have MC. My Dr. tells me not to read anything on the internet, however, the experiences of others in the same situation is so helpful and comforting.
Thank you much.
