Hi Ingrid,
In my opinion, probiotics are a crapshoot for those of us with GI issues. It's very difficult to tell if the brand you are using contain the microorganisms that your gut truly "needs" or if they contain ingredients that may actually aggravate your condition which I think is a real possibility. Everybody's GI microbiome is unique as to what it may need; it's not a one size fits all.
As for having Microscopic Colitis, I discontinued my use of Probiotics because of the above unknown as soon as I was diagnosed. I had been using them on a daily basis at time of diagnosis. Prior to that, I would use them anytime that I was prescribed an "antibiotic" to help counter the effects of those scripts.
So as they say with so many things ........"your results may vary". I'm sure that there are those that may benefit from a particular strain of probiotic. But I wouldn't recommend taking any of them in the initial healing stages. Then be prepared to experiment with different brands and strains of them. Also, keep a food and symptoms diary both before and after starting probiotics to help you determine if they have had any beneficial effects.
All the best to you Ingrid!

Ingrid,
I agree with the advice given by tommyboywalker, and everything he posted above. Except for sauerkraut, I've never used any probiotic product other than yogurt, and I stopped eating yogurt when I discover that MC had made me casein-sensitive. For MC patients, probiotics in general are more likely to cause problems than to help. They do seem to help a very small percentage of patients, but for every patient they help, there are probably 2 or 3 who were doing well before they started using probiotics, but they experience a relapse after using probiotics. Even the American Gastroenterological Association Institute advises against using probiotics when treating MC.
But as he said, we're all different, and you might be one of the small percentage who are helped by probiotics.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
