Brands of ground turkey

Post by ldubois7 »

Has anyone found a safe brand of ground turkey, that’s readily available, with no rosemary extract?

I am sad to say that I have not found a commercially available turkey product as of yet. I thought I had found one, the brand Michigan Turkey, the ingredients state "ground turkey & natural flavorings". When I contacted the company and asked if the product contained rosemary extract, they said it contains "ground rosemary". While this SOUNDS safe, I still didn't want to risk it so I opted to skip purchasing it. I was able to successfully find ground turkey at my local butcher here in Kansas. I questioned them extensively and they confirmed that the turkey meat goes straight from the processing room, to the grinder, to the butcher paper to be frozen. No added ingredients. Do you have a butcher within a reasonable distance that you could look into?

Tiffany,

I live in rural PA, and locally we only have turkey during the Thanksgiving season.
Everyone feeds with soy, too.

I’ve ordered from other places in the country, but am tired of the cost.
Just wondered if there was a cleaner brand out there that I was unaware of.

Thanks!
Linda :)

I would love some, too. I believe Tex said once that most ground turkey contains soy...I'll stay tuned.

I have a butcher shop that grinds turkey without any added ingredients. Also they sell venison, lamb. and ground pork. Also sell gluten free Boars head meats. The place is expensive but thank God for this place.

Marcia,

Yes, most ground turkey contains rosemary extract as a preservative, and while that sounds natural, it’s usually made of soy oil.

Thinking ground turkey was safe

Post by dolson »

Oh no, now what? Never thought about ground turkey containing rosemary extract made from Soy. We eat Green Wise ground turkey from Publix. We looked, and it does contain Rosemary extract, but I don't think I've had problems. Soy does irritate my Gut! Just when you felt safe with a food... Dorothy

Hmmm. Maybe this is why my last Enterolab result for soy was at 10 units just a few months ago? I truly didn’t know what to make of that but I had bigger issues to deal with at the time. Soy makes me sick with intense nausea among other upper GI issues.

TiffanyR- where is your butcher shop located?

Thanks,
Carol

Carolina Turkey appears to be 100% turkey, free of additives. It's by Butterball. 5 lb frozen chubs.

On a related note, most ground turkey labels I've read indicate the grind contains other parts of turkey besides meat. Not sure about the Carolina chubs. The packaging doesn't indicate one way or another. In fact, the packaging doesn't have any ingredients list at all, similar to ground beef packaging. The meat department manager told me that the law would require an ingredients list if it contained anything other than turkey. So the lack of an ingredients list is consistent with their webpage regarding additives.

Regarding the rosemary extract in Jennie-O's ground turkey, they emailed me "The rosemary extract can be stabilized with a highly refined soybean oil."

I’ll look into Carolina Turkey.

If ground turkey doesn’t contain rosemary extract, it usually says ‘natural flavorings’ .....isn’t that scary???

And when I called the Kroger company about their ground turkey to ask what their natural flavoring was they said rosemary. I didn’t know enough at the time to ask if it was extract, processed with soy bean oil.

Natural Flavorings on Meat and Poultry Labels

What substances or ingredients can be listed as "natural flavor," "flavor," or "flavorings" rather than by a specific common or usual name?

Spices (e.g., black pepper, basil, and ginger), spice extracts, essential oils, oleoresins, onion powder, garlic powder, celery powder, onion juice, and garlic juice are all ingredients that may be declared on labeling as "natural flavor," "flavor," or "flavoring." Spices, oleoresins, essential oils, and spice extracts are listed in the Food and Drug Administration regulations.
