IN ISOLATION BECAUSE OF CORONA

Post by sonja »

Hi all,

Today I decided to go in isolation to minimize the chance i will be infected with the coronavirus. i live in the centre of Amsterdam and all my activities for the coming week are cancelled by the different organizations. All our musea and concertbuildings are closed. The schools will probably be closed tomorrow.

I don't know how vulnurable we exactly are, but I don't want to take the chance to come in hospital in the actual situation in the Netherlands. I know the hospitals here in general don't succeed in serving save gluten-free meals, not to speak about serving a meal that I can eat with all my food intolerances. So when I come in the hospital, I will certainly get waterey D and my age (68) is also not an advantage.
In Italy there was a message from a nurse who asked everybody to stay home. She told that in her hospital (I thought Brescia, not sure) that day 35 people died, also because they don't have the capacity there to take care of evryone. They have to choose who can live (be treated) or die. people are dying in the corridors alone, because their family is not allow to be with them. They have to choose who they treat and they choose the young and more healthy. So when I come in a hospital with under capacity and have certainly continuous d, I will be the first one they put in the corridor. So, I decided not to go to hospital and therefore I trie not to get infected! We have 18 million people and 1100 ic beds.
Better safe than sorry.

In the meantime I don't know the exact reason why we are more vulnerable. Our imuumsystem is very active, so that should be positive, but maybe it doesn't react in the right way and of course our leaky gut is not an advantage.
I would like to hear your meaning about this!

I will miss my grandchildren most, but this is a good retraite for me and I also will be going out to walk a lot!

Hi Sonja,

I agree, that's a wise thing to do. Your grandchildren will be safe, so they'll be there when you are able to see them again. Your own safety is the most important item at the moment— nothing else matters as much, in the long term.

Actually, there is some medical evidence that when someone has an autoimmune disease (such as MC), their immune system is better able to deal with viruses such as the coronavirus. The biggest threat is to people who have preexisting lung or breathing issues, as the virus will likely cause them to develop pneumonia.

And you are right — the best way to avoid the disease is to avoid other people. If you can't avoid meeting them, be sure to wash your hands afterward, and disinfect anything they touch, if they come into your home. Don't touch your face, especially before washing your hands. I believe that many people are carriers and they are contagious, even before showing any symptoms of the disease, so please don't let your guard down.

Good decision! I would do the same, but I still have to go to work.. In Austria from today the government issued a self quarantine for the entire population for 7 days. Unfortunately this is not the case here in Belgium. It is a sad thing that you are at the mercy of your governments decision making.. What’s better in this situation reaction or prevention? I am thinking of calling in sick..

Sonja,

You are smart and doing the right thing. I'm doing pretty much the same. Best of luck to you.

Interesting point about our immune system being better equipped to fight this virus. I'm taking 3 mg Budesonide a day, and am wondering if the small amount of steroid that enters systemically will have a sizable negative impact on my immune system. Would be interested in having your thoughts on this Tex.

Thanks,
Kari

Hi Kari,

This is just an educated guess, but in my opinion it's likely that after taking budesonide for about 6 months to a year (depending on your sensitivity/response to budesonide) it will probably start having an effect on your immune system. How much is impossible to predict, but if that dose is effective (is having an effect on you), then it will eventually suppress your immune system at least a slight amount.

Henry,

That's a tough situation to be in. You should be young enough to be able to handle the virus if you get it, as long as you don't have any preexisting lung or breathing issues, but who wants to catch Covid-19? At my age, I would have to call in sick for sure.

Thank you Tex - your "educated guess" is for sure much better than mine:). If you are right, I should probably think of tapering down at some point. I've been very comfortable at this minimal level, but after 4 months of 3 mg a day, there is no sign of constipation, so I'm reluctant to taper. I keep thinking that the little extra that goes systemically is good for keeping down any general inflammation in my body. As you may remember, I was diagnosed with vasculitis a couple of years ago. Thanks again for your wise comments.

Love,
Kari

I believe you're very likely right in your thinking that the systemic part of the dose helps keep your general inflammation level down. So you have sufficient justification for using it.

Have you ever experimented to see how well a capsule every other day might work? You might be pleasantly surprised to find that it works just as well for you as a capsule every day. That might be wishful thinking on my part, but budesonide has a rather persistent effect, as anti-inflammatory medications go.

Tex

Good morning Tex,

Thank you for your suggestion. I haven't felt this good and relaxed in years, so I am very reluctant to start cutting back at this point in time. I'm kind of going by the guideline of "waiting for signs of constipation". Just completed 4 months, so perhaps another couple of months will make a difference? I keep to my very strict "paleo" diet, and am hoping that the budesonide, coupled with my strict diet will provide the final step in the healing process. I have been at this for 10 years now, and am soooo tired of worrying about reactions. What finally tipped the scales for me to throw in the towel and try budesonide, was that I started to have "accidents", which was a novel experience.

Thank you so much for being a constant presence here, helping and advising all of us. It is hard to believe that almost a decade has gone by since I found this wonderful place of encouragement and support.

Love,
Kari

Good call Sonja....

Not that I'm paranoid or anything....but I wouldn't want to even catch the flu right now either! Watching the over abundance of fear in everyone is very worrisome to me, but there is nothing I can do about it. This whole virus thing saddens me. To think there were irresponsible people that let their guard down that started all this.

I just want everyone to take care of themselves, mind and body....everything will work out in the end.

In my job I don't have to interact with people very closely if at all so I will work until I am not able to as well.
Hugs

Dear internet family,

Thank you all so much for your posts!
Tex, i am glad to hear that my imuumsystem maybe will work even better than average!
I also have always problems with my mucous membrane, but my longs are ok. In fact i'm in good shape and not anxious of getting the corona infection, but the possibility of ending alone in a hospital bed in a hospital, that has not enough capacity frightens me. Not for me, but for my family.
I am in the luxury position that I don't have to work anymore. Today we went for a beautiful walk!
For everyone who has to work and can't go in isolation: take care for your body, soul and mind, take enough magnesium and Vit D3 and the supplements you need, have enough sleep and stay relaxed and positive!

Love, Sonja

PS The Netherlands have chosen not to lock the country, but for trying to control the virus by letting it infect people in a controlled, slow way, so that the immuun people make after some time a wall, a kind of protection, for the more vulnerable, elderly people. The goal is to flatten the curve of infections, so that the hospitalcapcity will be sufficient in the coming time.
