Need help uploading avatar

Post by Lorraine »

I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I follow the instructions for uploading the avatar from my desktop. The graphic is 80x75 and 4.3 KB so it comes within the specs. When I hit submit, it says it has been saved. But it's not showing up in my posts. Help!
Why be unhappy about something if it can be remedied?
And what is the use of being unhappy if it cannot be remedied?

Hi Lorraine,

Sometimes the system is finicky about avatars. If you will email the avatar to me, I can usually force the system to take it. Or better yet, email the original image before you resized it, in case there's a problem with the resizing process. Ill be happy to upload it for you. You can email me by simply clicking on the "email" button at the bottom of this message.

You're very welcome. As you can see, you're in the shadows in the photo, so I lightened it a bit, but I was limited in how far I could go because the highlights were becoming washed out as I lightened the foreground. If you want me to try to make any modifications or corrections to the avatar, please let me know. Your avatar is in the Custom Avatar Folder, under Avatars in your profile options.

The image is quite blurry. Anything you can do about that?

Yes. I increased the light (and raised the contrast) by 40%. Reversing that would allow significantly better definition. I had to use a JPG compression quality of only 8 % in order to get the image size down below 6 kb. That's why it's so blurry. Normally, a compression quality of about 35 % will work fine for most avatars this size. IOW, increasing the light for the image is the problem, but I'm afraid it will appear rather dark without lightening. Do you want me to use the image without a correction? I should be significantly sharper that way, just darker.

I'd like to see what the image looks like without a correction. If I think it's too dark, then I'll send you a different photo to use instead. Thanks, Tex!

I still had to go down to 10 % compression quality to get that image to fit. To improve the quality further (by a significant amount), The image would have to be cropped. But the main problem is that the image is not well-suited for making an avatar (because avatars have to be sized down so small). It could probably be salvaged by cropping the right side and then adding more light.

This image is becoming too much trouble and not worth your spending any more time on it.

I'll email you another photo to try. Hopefully, it will be better suited for making an avatar. BTW, what constitutes a well-suited image for making an avatar?

I started with the middle image of the three you sent, and that one worked great. I suspect the previous image that we tried had some sort of issue, because it insisted on being contrary. I hope this one is satisfactory, but if it isn't, I'll be happy to try again.
