insomnia
Hi, i am 2 months post diagnosis of LC.
i HAVE BEEN ON STRICT GLUTEN FREE, DAIRY FREE, SOY FREE, SUGAR FREE DIET FOR THE LAST 8 WEEKS.
I have eaten the same 5 safe foods for the last 2 months and have not cheated.
My gut is better, it is quiet, the brutal nausea that i had daily is gone,i have no pain and i have one semi formed bm every am.
I am pleased with my progress gut wise, and was starting to think i could move to stage 2 meal[plan, very soon.
Over the last two weeks, i am struggling just to get 2-3 hours fo sleep.
Its gettign bad, i can not function day to day because i am so exhausted due to lack of sleep.
Where did this come from, i was doing so well?? What went wrong?
I am calm and relaxed when i go to bed, i am not stressed about anything, this has really thrown a wrench into my recovery.
I am starting to think i will never be a wife and mom again. i am so discouraged.
Any suggestions besides sleeping pills, i wont take drugs, i react negatively to everything.
Thank you
Jen

Re: insomnia
Hi Jen,
Are you taking any magnesium? Magnesium helps to relax your muscles, and it helps most people to fall sleep faster/easier and stay asleep. Some members have tried a melatonin supplement, and found it to be helpful.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Re: insomnia
I am sorry Tex, i never recieved an alert that you responded.
Just checked randomly and saw your response.
I am just applying the mag lotion 5 times a day, the oral kind gave me D.
I have never had insomnia before, i feel it is really inrerfering with my recovery.
I was doing so well now i have gone backward.
All part of the disease i guess?

Re: insomnia
the diet changes along with the mental and emotional changes that life with MC brings can impact sleep quality....
our whole approach to day to day life, eating, doing everything we can to minimise poop issues can cause mild anxiety.
suggestions:-
-magnesium lotion before bed, and when you wake through the night rub it on shoulders/neck
- when you wake through the night use relaxing meditation tracks / podcasts / audiobooks you can get headband type headphones that are fantastic for using to get back to sleep - you can sleep in them and it wont disturb partner etc
- set up a good pre bed time routine - minimal blue screen/tv , soft lighting, at least 2 hours after eating, doing relaxing activities
- dont overthink the need to sleep - so long as the body is relaxing, mind is relaxing this is restorative

Re: insomnia
based on my experience there is no limit to how much topical magnesium you can use
when I was correcting my magnesium deficiency i was using lotion / magnesium foot soaks and oral magnesium (over 750mg per day across the delivery methods for over 6 months)
another idea i just remembered is breathing exercises , there are lots of free resources on the net /you tube. these are really good for helping to slow heart rate, calm the mind etc.
