Hi,
I have been struggling with MC for many yrs. I have tried most of the suggestions on this forum and eat a very restricted diet. I still have symptoms most of the time. I recently had cataract surgery and used prednisolone eyedrops. For a period of two weeks I was using 8 drops a day. My MC symptoms improved greatly! I tried budesonide several yrs ago after first being diagnosed. It seemed to make my symptoms worse. Now I am wondering if it was just too strong of a dose. Has anyone used a small dose of budesonide with success?
Also, the alldaychemist.com website does not seem to be working. Has anyone used it recently?
Thanks so much!
Julie

Re: budesonide vs prednisolone
Hi Julie,
I can't speak from experience, because I've never used either medication. But reading all the posts here, I get the impression that when a corticosteroid treatment is not effective, a larger dose is more likely to be effective. IOW, when trying to resolve a flare, a few doctors prescribe 3 mg per day of budesonide, but that virtually never works (except for maintaining remission once remission is achieved). Almost all MC patients are much more likely to respond to a maximum dose (9 mg), as opposed to a reduced. dose. At least that's my impression. If they don't respond to that, it's just not effective for them.
Regarding AllDayChemist: they may be having shipping problems. I recently tried to ship to several foreign countries and couldn't do it because of COVID-19 restrictions on shipping packages. I don't know how common this problem is, but overseas shipping (at least to or from certain countries) is becoming more difficult as the pandemic becomes a bigger problem.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Re: budesonide vs prednisolone
Hi Julie,
I have used Budesonide twice. A few years ago after my initial diagnosis of MC and then fast forward to now as I suffered a relapse in the spring and am now on the last taper dose (one capsule every third day). It worked the first time and is now working the second time. Very pleased. It though is always used with the recommendation of being gluten free, dairy free and to avoid any other foods that you are sensitive to.
I have never heard of anybody starting with less than the 9mg dosage. I understand that you didn't have a good initial experience but it could be possible that your GI was so out of whack that the Budesonide itself might not have been the root cause of an increase in symptoms? Just brainstorming here. IMHO, I think it would be worth it to give Budesonide another try with the full dosage. If symptoms get worse again, then you have more confirmational proof that the drug may be involved. But if it works, then everything to gain! If you do use it, please please please do a very slow taper of this drug! People that taper too quickly almost always relapse. If you want my taper strategy, message me as I would be glad to share it with you.
As for AllDayChemist, I was just on their website. While their server is definitely much slower than I have experienced other times, I was finally able to get on their site and get to the Budez 3mg (which incidentally is on sale). These types of server problems typically are resolved within a day or two once their IT department figures out the issue so keep trying. I have had very good luck with AllDayChemist and have used them 3 or 4 times now total for both Budez and other things. I will tell you though that their shipping to the United States is quite a bit slower than it used to be because of the pandemic so you would have to allow for that. I'd tell you to allow about 6 weeks, although it might come sooner than that.
Hope this helps, let us know if you have any more questions!

Re: budesonide vs prednisolone
Hi Julie,
As you may know, how we react individually to attempts at getting our MC symptoms under control vary greatly. What works for one person, may not work for someone else. So we each have to experiment and figure out what works for us.
I have been struggling with this disease for 20 years, and am finally in remission. After 10 years of WD, I found this board and Enterolab. From that time on I started tweeking my diet, with good results. I did not want to take meds, so shied away from Budesonide. However, no matter how careful I was, I still did not feel totally secure, and occasional urgent BM's were part of my life. Then I had a couple of "accidents" in my own home on the way to the bathroom. This was "the straw that boke the camel's back" for me, and I decided to try Budesonide.
Having read so many stories here over the years, I wanted to be very careful and started on 3 mg. a day. When I felt better the very next day, I was flabbergasted. Well, staying with 3 mg. a day ever since (a little over one year now) has kept me in total remission. I only go once in the morning and have normal BM's. Tex has said to only start tapering when there are signs of constipation. This has finally happened to me, so I have started on 3 mg. every other day to see how that goes.
Regarding Prednisone, I was on it for a different condition for 5 months. It took care of the D., but coming off it was a horrible experience, and my insecure bathroom issues came back. It is much stronger the Budesonide, and works systemically rather than being focused on the colon. If I can help it, I will never be on prednisone again.
I have not had a good experience with All Day Chemist. My first couple off orders were fine, but then I started having problems receiving orders, so I'm now getting it locally. Since my insurance covers a lot of the price, it's not too bad.
Best of luck to you with finding your way to control your MC.
Kari
