WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Greetings, Forum Friends - I was Tested back in 2015 and I know already about a Gluten Free Diet. But now, My new Entero Labs showed a Fecal Anti-Soy IgA of 12 (below 10 being the guide). Food Reactivity still showed All 7 food groups as NO Reaction. But a 1+ for Oats (which I don't knowingly eat), a 2+ for Almonds and Cashews and a 3+ for Walnuts.
Please, if someone could help me discover where the Soy is coming from. What kind of Products, Foods, or Dairy might have Soy that could warrant my going from a Fecal Anti-Soy IgA of 3 back in 2015 to a 12 now in 2020?
I did eat a lot of Almond Butter and Peanut Butter for the last few years to keep weight on me. And I drank more Lactaid Milk for the same reason. I also ate more cheese than usual because back in 2015, my Labs did not show any reaction to Dairy. Do those products contain Soy?
Does SOY hide in foods like Gluten does or go under different names in an ingredient list?
Thank you for your time!
Blessings,
TREESE

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Treese,
Here's a link to an old list of possible sources of soy. There are probably a few additional sources by now. Note that some of these may or may not contain soy, depending on what a manufacturer chooses to use to make make ingredients from. And that usually depends on prices. Manufacturers usually use the cheapest feedstock they can buy. Anything that contains vegetable oil, for example, usually contains soy. But if they use something else, they'll usually specify what they use on the label, for example corn or sunflower oil.

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Soy is in EVERYTHING
it is a cheap crop, and there is tonnes of it. and manufacturers use it as filler for food products.
and not just foods.
check your make up / moisteners / lip balms. Anything with Vit E is 99% likely to have soy (and you are absorbing this via your skin)
processed gluten free food items / FLour Blends are high contenders to have soy
Vegetables and eggs in supermarkets are sprayed with soy oil to help them last longer in refrigerated storage / supermarket shelves
Peel vegetables thoroughly do not eat boiled eggs
Dairy replacement cheeses will have soy in them.
Having an eating plan based on whole foods is the best way to avoid soy.

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Thank You, TEX, for the Link to that Soy List and the Tip on "vegetable oil"!
And Gabes, Thanks for the heads up on all the specific things I asked about. Even boiled Eggs...wow!
And About Flour Blends - even the GF Flours used for baking GF items? Like the ones in Boxes on the store shelves that say Gluten Free muffins or bread?
My EnteroLabs did not show Peanut Allergies, but I believe you said peanuts are a legume and hence, soy.
Make-Up and Moisterizers - I bought Fractionated Coconut Oil and Shea Butter like you recommended previously, for my skin.
Any soy-free Product suggestions for make-up? I use Cover Girl now.
Thank You and thanks, TEX, for always being there! Bless you Both!

Yes
processed GF items are any pre made packaged items like cereals, pasta, breads etc
you will need to check labels for ingredients
same for GF flour blends. if you struggle to do it at the supermarket, use the web to research before you go shopping so you can find safe brands.
re make up
I dont wear make up so can not help you there (and we have different brands here in Australia)
there is a sub section of the forum with multiple discussions

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Thank You Gabes and TEX! I will do my Product Research before shopping. And I will also see if I can find out if there is an APP for Soy detection. I have a New one for Gluten that I got with the iPhone I now have.
ABOUT SOY Again - Does Soy have to be regulated as carefully as Gluten? Meaning does one must be aware of cross-contamination and use all separate utensils and such like with Gluten and its many restrictions?
Is there an APP that Anyone knows about for SOY detection by scanning the product label?
Thank You!

so far as
Does Soy have to be regulated as carefully as Gluten? Meaning does one must be aware of cross-contamination and use all separate utensils and such like with Gluten and its many restrictions?
there is nothing so black and white in MC world. Everyone is different
for me, I react worse to soy than gluten. So for near 10 years I have had to be super careful about cross contamination of soy and gluten.
part of this healing journey is figuring out what works and what doesnt work for you!
In MC world, we cant do everything perfectly 100% of the time. a good long term MC management plan is doing the best we can without overthinking/stressing.
if you are following a good whole foods eating plan, taking the right supplements, minimal stress in your life, minimal external toxins, and there is good healing in your gut, then I have found small amounts of contamination do not cause major issues (ie i can eat out, go to sporting events and eat foods there and not have major reactions)
but i cant do that every day. I budget for treats/eating out etc.
If I am in periods of stress / or my immune system is fighting something then I tend to react to small amount of contamination
hope this makes sense

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Hi Treese,
I am also sensitive to soy. If I get a lot of it I get intense nausea. if I get a little I ache all over the next day. I went through a stretch of about 3 months getting more and more aches and pains everyday. I thought I was getting fibromyalgia, seriously. I decided to throw it out to the group here and Polly was the one who said "check your supplements and look for Alpha-tocopherols or D-Alpha-Tocopherol-- these are soy'. I had just started a liquid Omega 3-6 supplement and one of the first additives was D-Alpha tocopherols. I stopped taking it and my pain went away (it took a few weeks for it all to be gone). Soy hides under different names. The best thing to do is get a list of the other names for soy and just check all labels.
Best Wishes,
Carol

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Hi, Carol!
I believe you about the Alpha-tocopherols. I printed out that list from the Forum on Soy that TEX mentioned and it says Vitamin E right next to Alpha-tocopherols. So, now I'm checking out my Vitamins and Supplements for Vitamin "E" And Alpha-tocopherols BOTH!
Thank You for the TIP!
I also noticed that Coffee Mate and Most Canned Tuna on the market today have Soy. They might call it "vegetable broth" or "vegetable oil", but it's still Soy! I know because I found those terms on that same list. (Thank You Forum for Posting it)
What I didn't realize is what you said about your symptoms of pain by ingesting these supplements containing Soy. I take a lot of Medicines for Chronic Pain. What about Medicines? How does one check out Medication Ingredients? Is there a separate List posted on the Forum anywhere for that?
Thanks so much, Carol!
Have a blessed day!

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Treese,
Pharmaceutical products (medications) are only required by the FDA to list the percentage/weight of active ingredients. There are no labeling requirements on inactive ingredients. However, most responsible pharmaceutical manufacturers list the amount and percentage of inactive ingredients, anyway. They're not required by law to do so, however. There are no lists of specific ingredients available anywhere for medications, that I'm aware of, and pharmacies often use generic substitutes because of customer insurance requirements. So you have to check your labels, and hope for the best.

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Thank You for that information on Medications, Tex!
Carol made me think yesterday after I pondered her Reply about Soy and her bodily pains as indicators of it being somewhere still hidden in her diet.
Is Gluten Reactivity with its symptoms of Diarrhea and ensuing Diagnosis by a Medical Doctor what constitutes a CC Issue?
For Example, if one only reacted to Soy or Tree Nuts on an Entero Labs test just to find out for one's own knowledge what foods one reacted to, without having a diagnosed CC issue, one would Not be having diarrhea, but other symptoms instead?
Is it the gluten that causes the Diarrhea or can reaction to Tree Nuts or Soy cause it, too?
Thank You,
TREESE

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Initially, gluten, alcohol, excessive sugar, stress, etc. or combinations, on a continuing (chronic) basis, cause leaky gut, and leaky gut causes additional food sensitivities, which cause additional inflammation, which causes MC if the reactions are allowed to continue. After MC develops, then any food sensitivity can trigger a reaction. At least that's the way I see it.

Re: WHERE Is The SOY Hiding?
Hi, TEX - I can see what you mean. How difficult to keep on top of it all until you've really become sensitive to your own body. I guess that's what it comes down to; learning to Listen to your own body's language.
I think this last flare up really affected my stress levels which didn't help my CC at all. And I ask a lot of questions, I know. But, you are the only ones with the experience and understanding of this disease that a person can turn to. Thank you so much for your patience with me!
