When to start Phase Two

Post by Cakes6847 »

Good morning all - i have a new question:
Do i need to be off the budesonide before i start adding in new foods? I ask this because my understanding is that the medication masks symptoms. So if i am still taking it, how will i know if i am reacting to foods or not?
I have been taking budesonide for about 12 weeks (9mg), began the wean (6 mg) 3 weeks ago. Still on a Phase One diet. All of my sensitivities, according to Enterolab, were +2 and +3. I have very few “safe” foods.
Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated 🙌

Yes, you are correct. The budesonide will mask some of your food sensitivities, so you need to have it out completely of your system before you start testing foods. Otherwise, when you discontinue the budesonide treatment and all traces of it leave your body, you may relapse, and you won't have the slightest idea why.

Re: Weaning Budesonide

Post by Cakes6847 »

Hello everyone - i have a question about weaning off the Budesonide. I began 9mg daily in September. I reduced it
to 6 mg the end of November. I attempted to go to 3mg early January. Unfortunately about 10 days later became symptomatic again w some diarrhea and upped the dosage back to 6 mg.
At this point i am having really loud, somewhat consistent
gurgling noises. No pain but soft stools.
Does this mean the MC is still very active? Should i go back to 9mg per day?
My lab results showed i had sensitivities to EVERYTHING -all +2 and +3. No zeros or ones. My diet has been pretty consistent with plant-based non-dairy yogurt, applesauce, sweet potatoes, turkey turkey and more turkey. Bananas and sunflower butter. I also throw in cassava chips since I believe they are safe. At this point i have no idea. Not much i can cut out.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you for your help :)

Hi Cakes,

Well, I'm not sure what to suggest, but yes, that loud gurgling noise seems to be unique to MC, when it's active, so that noise confirms that you still have one or more foods in your diet that is/are causing inflammation and preventing remission. It sounds like you're close, but something in your diet is still causing problems.

Going back to 9mg of budesonide might stop the symptoms, but that won't get rid of the problem. Unless you want to take a full dose of budesonide indefinitely (which I doubt your doctor would approve), you need to discover the cause of the problem. I'm guessing it's the yogurt, because no matter what is used as the base substrate, virtually all yogurt fermentation processes are started with barley. And that contaminates the yogurt with enough secalin (the barley equivalent of gluten), that most of us would react to it. That's just a guess though — I know nothing about the actual product.

Thank you Tex for your quick response. I will eliminate the yogurt and hope it is the solution 🙏🏼

Re: Elimination/Stage one diet broths

Post by Cakes6847 »

Hello all...i have a question about broths. I am limited to lamb bone broth (sensitive to beef, chicken and pork) and now my butcher just told me his lamb supplier is MIA.
I know vegetable broth is not closely related to the benefits of bone broth but i am a little desperate for something warm to drink/sip (am eliminating coffee and tea)

So in a stage one diet, could i make a vegetable broth with onions, peppers, thyme and rosemary, carrots, celery? My thought is that perhaps the veggies would be softened enough not to cause additional calamity to my system.

Thanks for your help:D

I just went online and there appears to be a few places that sell and ship lamb bones...I’m not saying it cheap, it’s just available if that’s the only alternative you have.

Thank you very much Laine...i did see that i can order lamb bones on line. Absolutely not cheap. However i am moving to a new state and will order (or purchase directly i hope) once i get there.

But in meantime was looking for a YAY or NAY on vegetable broth for stage one diet.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me 🙌

Hello Cakes,

Two years ago, when I was strongly reacting, I wouldn’t have been able to tolerate any of those ingredients except the carrots in a broth. Now I can tolerate all but the peppers. Everyone is different, but it might be a bit early for you.

Hello again,

Perhaps you can tolerate some of them. I should have added that since you seem to have successfully found your safe foods, you could test others individually, not all in one broth at one time. The wonderful people in this forum taught me to proceed slowly and test each food for at least three days, wait a day or even a week in between, then challenge another. I now can eat about 40 foods and spices instead of only five when I was first healing—which is a great improvement. Hope is important for healing and acceptance!

Thank you again for your support Harmony. You know first hand how difficult this disease process can be. And it would be impossible to manage without this site. 🙃
