Good morning all! New member here and thanks to Tex and this site am starting to understand more about MC. THANK YOU to this group!! Having asked my GI doc about all the symptoms I’d been having over the year prior to diagnosis, he denied every symptom I had as being related to this disease. So, now I’m asking you you the experts. Are the following symptoms caused by/related to MC:
Intense heat in belly esp. wakes me at nite
Insomnia (wake every hour w/urge to pee)
Bladder infection
Dizziness
Fatigue/weakness
Arthritis in thumbs (coincides w/MC diagnosis)
Increased low back pain (have 30 year history back probs)
Very low pulse rate (bradycardia)
Welt like rash on breast (comes and goes)
Fogginess
——————————————-
Questions:
1. What to do for insomnia? Have taken melatonin and unisom w/no improvement) Take Epsom salts baths that help a little) Just like everyone here, I NEED to sleep
2. Is MC considered an autoimmune disease?
3. Still confused about the progression of MC; does the food sensitivities occur because of the inflammation or were the sensitivities always there?
4. Can the inflammation in intestines caused by MC spread to other parts of body, like the brain for instance?
—————————————-
Thank you so much for any help you can offer!! As you can probably tell, I’m still trying to understand how in hell I got this damn disease
Have a wonderful day,
Susan Harris

Hello Susan,
Welcome to the group. I'll try to answer all your questions without making this excessively long. Bear in mind that we're all different, so this is a generalization based on how most of us are affected. Individual symptoms may vary.
I hope this helps. You can get a much more detailed explanation from my books, if you want complete details.
Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

The answer is "yes" in every case. But these are secondary to satellite issues caused by MC (and not documented in the medical journals). The first four are caused by a chronic magnesium deficiency (MC depletes magnesium, and so do corticosteroids that are prescribed to treat it). Many other meds deplete magnesium. The last five symptoms you listed are caused by the compromised intestinal porosity (leaky gut) associated with MC that causes all food sensitivities. The welt-like rash is more likely to be due to histamine issues (MC depletes diamine oxidase enzyme [DAO]. Since DAO purges excess (unused) histamines from the body, as DAO becomes deficient, histamine levels become excessive, and cause allergic (usually on the skin) reactions.Susan wrote:Intense heat in belly esp. wakes me at nite

If melatonin doesn't help, your magnesium deficiency may be at a severe level.Susan wrote:1. What to do for insomnia? Have taken melatonin and unisom w/no improvement) Take Epsom salts baths that help a little) Just like everyone here, I NEED to sleep
Yes, definitely.Susan wrote:2. Is MC considered an autoimmune disease?
The chronic inflammation that causes MC causes compromised intestinal porosity (leaky gut). The leaky gut prompts the immune system to produce antibodies against the proteins from which the peptides (medium chain amino acids) that leak into the bloodstream are derived.Susan wrote:3. Still confused about the progression of MC; does the food sensitivities occur because of the inflammation or were the sensitivities always there?
Yes, we're all different, but most of us have multiple inflamed organs (especially digestive system organs) due to the perpetuation of the inflammation associated with active MC.Susan wrote:4. It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Re: Symptoms of CC and help for insomnia
Susan,
Sorry, I forgot about the bradicardia. Obviously bradicardia is not caused by leaky gut. Most likely, that's due to undertreated hypothyroidism. I have that issue myself. My resting heart rate is usually in the upper 50s to lower 60's. We're (as MC patients) 7 times as likely as someone in the general population to have thyroid issues, according to our own informal poll, done years ago.

One more observation:
You mention
Tex
You mention
A chronic magnesium deficiency can cause most of the symptoms of pre-diabetes.(wake every hour w/urge to pee)

Re: Symptoms of CC and help for insomnia
I’m very new here and definitely not anyone with any medical knowledge but I have suffered from chronic insomnia most of my life and definitely since developing lymphocytic colitis. I also have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome that is genetic and has been causing most of the symptoms you mentioned long before the colitis.
I use some homeopathic remedies to help with sleep and they have proven, for me, to be highly effective. I have no idea it they might be making the gut matters worse but I tried taking a break from them and it made no difference in my symptoms. I take at bedtime, under the tongue, 2 tablets of gaba and a dropper of tincture of mugwort, calamus and scullcap for sleep. I also get some relief from arthritis pain (that often keeps me awake) with a wild lettuce tincture. I did just realize that my tinctures are all made with vodka and my testing results (I got yesterday) said potatoes are a trigger so I will be starting new ones using a different alcohol.

Re: Symptoms of CC and help for insomnia
My suggestion to assist with CC and insomnia
- have main meal earlier in the day and make the evening meal lighter/smaller. Also eat at least 2-3 hours before bed time
- have a bed time routine - avoid blue screens (tv etc) incorporate relaxing activities of an evening, play podcasts/audiobooks/music. Do relaxing activity such as craft, colouring in etc.
- Magnesium foot soak of an evening (helps relax muscles and slow heart rate etc) and Tex mentions some of your symptoms are related to magnesium deficiency.
For me
- foggy brain issues resolved once inflammation reduced and I resolved deficiencies with key nutrients (active B's and magnesium)
- fatigue /weakness issues resolved again once inflammation was reduced and I resolved key deficiencies, Vit D3, magnesium and immune sumps like (Vit C and Zinc etc)
- joint pain resolved again with low inflammation eating plan/lifestyle and fixing Vit D3 and magnesium deficiencies
- multiple toilet visits during the night linked to kidney function issues resolved with reduced inflammation and fixing magnesium deficiency
hope this helps
