FLATULENCE And INTESTINAL HEALING

Post by TREESE »

Hello, Forum Friends!

Well, my good news is that my bowels have been back to normal for at least 5 maybe 6 mos now. I can eat at least 6 different foods, but I do still keep them quite plain. Now, here is the Weird part. Maybe a month ago, I re-started having my 1 cup of Coffee in the morning with breakfast. If I have my 1 cup of Coffee with 2% Lactaid Milk, I get terrible and long-lasting flatulence. And in the evening, 1 cup of Chamomile Tea, same thing. When I don't drink them, a great deal of the flatulence subsides. Other than those, all I drink is Water throughout the day. The flatulence does not give me loose bowels, but it just comes out without my control all the time and can be quite embarrassing.

I guess I have a couple of questions and concerns, the first being...

1) Is flatulence a sign that I am hurting or even delaying my intestinal healing and will likely have a flare up again if I keep it up?

2) What other hot beverages can one safely drink? No Ginger Tea. That also has the same effect.

3) Are Coconut Milk and/or Rice Milk Safe in Gluten Free Chex? What Brands, because I know some Brands may have traces of Gluten in them. Not sure if the Almond Milk is also causing me flatulence. I am testing that now.

I appreciate whatever guidance you might offer!

Your Replies will All be welcomed.....Thank you so much!

Hi Treese,

Most of us react to casein, which is in all dairy products, including Lactaid milk. It sounds as though you're reacting to that milk, and if that's the case, you will eventually find yourself in a full flare. Why choose something is risky as milk? I use 2 or 3 sugar cubes in my coffee, which eliminates the milk problem.

Coconut milk, almond milk, and cashew milk, are generally safe for us. Rice milk is safe for many of us, but it may contain up to the legal limit of 20 parts per million of gluten, and a few of us react at below that level. I doubt that almond milk would cause you any problems — I'm not aware of anyone who can't drink almond milk safely, even if they're sensitive to almonds. I can't eat almonds without digestive problems, but I use almond milk in gluten-free Chex cereals without any problems.

Green or black tea should be safe, but not if it has any additives such as milk.

Hello, TEX - Hoping all is well with you!

Thank you for your Reply about what was causing my flatulence.

Since you suggested I might try using sugar in my Coffee instead of Milk, not even Lactaid Milk, do you think Almond Milk that comes Sweetened already might be good in coffee? Or Vanilla-flavored Almond Milk in Coffee? Is there Casein in that? So far, I have only tried the UN-sweetened almond milk in GF Chex. Never tried Almond Milk in coffee.

And if you have an extra moment, on a different note, how is a smear of strawberry jelly on toast or a bit of cranberry on my all-too-dry chicken sandwiches? Are either of them known offenders? And, does Soy-Free Earth Balance Butter Spread have Casein in it?

This flare-up of 2020 is so different than my 1st one in 2015 was. I feel in many ways like I know less now than I did then because I seem to be reacting to more things than I was then.

Bless your patience, Sir! It may seem a silly, stupid thing to inquire about Coffee, but sometimes I just need some familiarity of routine and morning pleasure to be able to endure the harder stuff of changing my whole life's routine of eating habits.

If you can help, please do. And Thank you again and again!

Yes, the vanilla flavored version of Almond milk would probably work well in coffee, because it will add a little sweetness. I believe some members here use coconut milk.

If you buy a pure fruit product, such as Smucker's, for example, a jelly, jam, or fruit preserves should be fine, unless you overdo it and exceed your ability to digest the sugar. Occasionally, I eat gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free pancakes with maple syrup, and bacon. Back when I was originally recovering, about 15 years ago, maple syrup, or maple sugar, was the only sugar that I could tolerate.

Soy free Earth balance spread should be safe. Did you actually mean soy free Earth balance butter spread? Butter contains casein.

Hi, Tex - The Jelly I mentioned and the Soy Free Spread are SMUCKERS Naturals, Red Rasberry made from Natural Sources and
Soy-Free Earth Balance Spread, powered by plants; non-GMO, Vegan, Non-Dairy, Lactose free. 78% Vegetable Oils.

I have also Very much enjoyed the pancakes that are FREE of all the main allergen groups and I had them with a bit of Maple Syrup, too! They are Excellent! "The Really Great Food Company" makes them. They are a pancake and waffle mix.

Thanks for answering all my questions today, and for all your guidance, TEX!

Have a good evening!
