HI Julie,
Here's my two cents worth.... gut pains usually boil down to rolling gas and my guess is your body is producing quite a bit of it while it is in a flare and unhappy :sad: So to wean away from that you will have to pare your foods waaaayyyy back to very basic I'm afraid.

Minimal sugars (because most if not all of our food we consume will turn to glucose or a sugar in the breakdown process)
Protein (when in doubt grab a piece of protein, most wild game and usually turkey and lamb are safe in the beginning)
Starch (tread easy with this one but White rice or Yellow potato are good beginners as a filler - use an Earthbalance or plant based spread with salt for flavor)
Maybe Coffee...if you have been ok with it just use dairy free creamers or just a little sugar if need be.
Stay hydrated....water, vitamin water (maybe check for fake sugars),
Magnesium and VitD3...be on this band wagon and start slowly. Use liquid mag lotion anywhere on the body (legs, arms, torso etc..) and the VitD at minimum 5000iu when reacting (sometimes I take 10,000iu for a few days and especially when I get a cold and feeling ill, and I also match that with 300-500mg of Magnesium internal/external what ever works).

I don't mention fruits or vegetables right now because your body isn't sure what it's doing at the moment and the budensonide will only keep masking what you are reacting to so people use it to get a handle on things and rebalance how they want to approach this dis-ease. Once they feel settled it is important to really hone in on what foods are helpers and hinderers, and you only know this by not covering the signs up with medicine :smile:

I know this is a lot of information.....do what you can and a lot of this is patience not perfection and hang in there :wink:

Hi Erica,
Thank you so much for your "two cents worth"! It's worth a lot more than that to me! I will try what you suggested, it all makes total sense!!! I do drink coffee every morning, but always black. I also drink lots of water, I will look into the vitamin water. I know the Budesonide is just a "band-aid" for the time being, but I am really hoping/praying that with these new diet changes some healing can start before I'm done with it! :shrug: I will get some Vit D3 and Magnesium!!!

Be sure to get Magnesium Glycinate either from brand KAL or Drs Best if internal or ReMag by DrCarolyndean.com for lotion. Those are my top choices, there are others you can research though :grin: being diligent with whatever you do is the biggest thing.

Hi Julie,

In addition to what Erica suggested, please note that colostrum is loaded with casein, and Cheerios contains gluten from the barley malt that's used to start the Malting process, so please don't try the more of those items again. All cereals that are not clearly marked gluten-free are made from grain that undergoes a malting process that's started with barley malt. Malting turns some of the starch in the grain to sugar, which makes it taste sweeter, and that's why it's used for making cereals. Also, Cheerios is made from oats, and virtually all of us react to oats.

While you're recovering, don't think of breakfast in conventional terms. For most of us, our breakfast looks just like our other meals, while we're recovering, because we're not sure whether most of the conventional breakfast foods are safe for us at that point in our journey. These days, I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast on most days. But when I was recovering, 15 years or so ago, I ate leftovers from other meals the day before for breakfast most of the time. If you're not sure whether a food is safe, or not, please ask before you try it, because recovery is difficult, and it's easy to accidentally abort your recovery.

Good morning Tex,

Wow, I did not realize Cheerios was not Gluten free since it says Gluten free on the box. :sad: Also I've been eating Gluten free oatmeal everyday, sometimes twice a day as I am at a loss for what to eat anymore! So, I should stay away from that also as it is oats?!?? I know I can't eat bacon or eggs as they have caused problems in the past. Seems like anything pork bothers me. I was eating eggs until I started getting gut aches with them and read somewhere that we can be sensitive to the egg whites. I really am at a loss!!! It is good for me to hear you say that I can't look at breakfast as in conventional terms, but I don't even have left-overs to eat as I seem to be sensitive to almost everything.
And since I started on the Entocort, my BM's have been fairly normal, but now this morning I had diarrhea and continue to have daily gut aches. :sad:
I plan to do a turkey in the crockpot today, hopefully that will be ok for me.

Morning Julie,
In the beginning of this healing journey we react to everything....but if you pare the foods and anything you eat down to a basic few items and just eat those items everyday anytime during the day (because we are all starving at this point) you will see a change happen within a week, something will feel different and that’s when you decide to trade proteins for another or drop one of the starches and seek out a new one until the ingredients are just right for this moment. Then you heal for a while and the Budesonide becomes less and the new eating becomes more.....it’s not a starvation diet but it sure feels like it at first. If you get in a pinch eat protein to ward off the crazies 😉 then pause and plan again.

Julie,

Sorry that I misled you. Yes, there is a gluten-free version of Cheerios. If the box you have says gluten-free, then it is indeed gluten-free. So it's safe from that issue, but it's still made from oats, and while you are recovering at least, I would avoid oats, because as I mentioned, most of us react to them. If you must eat a cereal for breakfast, there are safe (gluten-free) versions of rice and corn cereals in health food stores. Rice Chex and Corn Chex are safe for most of us, although a few of us might react while we're still recovering, simply because they contain quite a few ingredients. That said, a few of us react to corn, so if you suspect corn, wait until after you're in remission to test it.

Regarding meats, lamb is safe for virtually all of us. Also the shellfish, including oysters, clams, shrimp, prawns, muscles, etc. appear to be safe for all of us except for those of us who had a previous shellfish allergy. And remember that, as Erica pointed out, it may seem tough now but it will get easier as you go, and your sensitivity level will decrease so the you won't seem to be reacting to everything.

Hi Julie,

Glaceau has one called Refresh tropical mango...and dragonfruit might be ok too.

I try to find ones with real cane sugars an no alcohol or saccharine sugars (because reaction to fake sugars are high).

Just suggestions as there are to many on the market and taste is so individual.

I’m new to LC this month and to the whole diet thing. I’m currently eating low fiber, gluten free and dairy free. Pretty much living on white rice, potatoes, chicken, turkey, canned carrots and canned green beans! But I have other autoimmune conditions including arthritis so should I be eating potatoes??

Hi Mary,

You might try avoiding potatoes for two or three weeks to see if it makes any difference in your arthritis symptoms, but I had bad arthritis symptoms about 20 years ago, and when I started the gluten-free diet, to treat by microscopic colitis, the arthritis symptoms slowly faded away. I threw my cane away. A few years later, I reintroduced dairy products into my diet, and my fingers began growing crooked again, and some of the joists were read and swollen. An EnteroLab test showed that my immune system was producing bodies to casein, so I cut dairy products back out of my diet, and I haven't had any arthritis problems since. I've eaten potatoes all my life, and I still eat them, so in my case at least, potatoes did not cause arthritis for me. My arthritis was caused by gluten and casein. But of course, we're all different, so I can't say that they wouldn't affect you, simply because they don't affect me.

Hi, this is Julie again,
Started taking Vit D3 5000iu and Mag Glyc. 250mg. per day, last few days have had increased bloating, gut aches and bad gas. Could it be the Mag.? I've cut back on my starches and literally no sugar. I feel like crap, literally! :sad:
