How Many Grams Of Fiber?

Post by Smiley »

Greetings,

I am brand new to this forum and continually read that I need to ingest a small amount of fibre in the first stages of recovery. How many grams of fiber should I consume per day in the first stage? Should I keep track of soluble and insoluble?

Hi,

I've addressed the fiber issue in my response to your other thread. As far as a requirement for a minimum amount, as far as I'm aware, no amount is actually essential. As far as nutrients are concerned, for good health, humans require protein and fat in their diet. Carbohydrates and fiber are not essential nutrients. Since fiber is in almost everything, it's virtually impossible to totally avoid, but ideally, we need to minimize it in our recovery diet as much as possible, because it's very irritating to an already-inflamed colon. As you recover, you may find it helpful to increase your fiber consumption in order to add a little bulk to your stool, but it's not absolutely essential. We have some members here who stick with an all meat diet when recovering, and their recovery goes quite well.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
