yellow leakage

Post by jennifer »

Hi all,
A new problem has come up and i thought i would put it out here to the experts, in case anyone can shed some light for me.

On monday, i felt burning around my anus while walking. Never felt this before.

When i got home, i notice a small amount of clear, yellow, thin drainage on my underwear and upon examining with a mirror, the area around my anus was raw and reddend.

It is not stool and there is no odor.

Could it be bile?

I have a normal bowel movement, every am. Its like clock work, an hour after i get up, no diarrhea, no constipation.

I am still on stage one as far as eating goes, GF, DF, sugar free. Same 7-8 foods everyday.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Geez, right when you start to feel somewhat normal, another road block!

Thank you
Jen

Hi Jen,

That sure sounds like bile. Has your gallbladder been previously surgically removed?

No Tex, i still have my gallbladder.

A few months ago when the nausea was really bad, my GI did an ultrasound and there was a large stone.

He thinks that was the reason for the nausea, felt it needed to come out and referred me to a surgeon.

I never went to see the surgeon, as the nausea subsided and honestly i didnt want to face an unnecessary surgery.

Why would i be leaking bile?

Thank you, Tex

In that case, you apparently have bile acid malabsorption (BAM). That's very common among patients who have active MC, and it's the reason behind 40 % of all cases of diarrhea (due to all causes) that refuse to respond to normal treatments. It's probably a miracle that you don't have diarrhea. The standard treatment is cholestyramine. It's available by prescription only, but your GP should be happy to write a prescription for you, because it's usually prescribed to lower cholesterol.

Incidentally, you probably made the right decision on that proposed surgery. Gallbladder issues are very common with active MC, and the symptoms almost always resolve after the MC is in remission.

Thank you for responding, Tex.

Ok, this is really weird, i have a perfectly formed bm once every am. Like a 4 on the scale.

I never thought of BAM, as i felt after 9 months at stage one, i was doing well. Purposely stayed at this stage so long to ensure good healing before i start reintroducing foods.

Things are very calm digestive wise.....no discomfort, gas, bloat, gurgles, etc, i feel good. So this really throws me. I didn't think i still had active MC?

This just started 2 days ago, so i guess i have developed a new issue.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me, i really do appreciate it.

Good night ,Tex

Jen,

I didn't mean to imply that your MC was still active. Anyone can have BAM. I just meant that it's usually accompanied by diarrhea.

If the problem is indeed unabsorbed bile, then the important question here is, "Why isn't the bile being reabsorbed in the terminal ileum?" That raises the possibility that the terminal ileum is still inflammed. If the terminal ileum is working normally (not inflammed), that could suggest a liver issue. If you've had a recent blood test for liver function, are all your liver enzymes in the normal range (AST, ALT, ALP, etc.)?

Hi Tex,

I am still so new at this and learning as i go. I dont even know what "active" or "remission" means for me yet.

I do know that i can say with 100% certainty that i would not be where i am now, without this forum to turn too. I am VERY GRATEFUL for this site!

Labs in April included a liver panel..........all within normal imits.

I am going to go with your theory about the terminal ileum and continue to watch / observe for changes.

I'll give it another week or two, I honestly do NOT want to contact a doctor until i find one in southern CA, who actually gets it. Don't worry, I WONT HOLD MY BREATH!!!

Thanks again , Tex, have a good day!

11 years on this still happens occasionally for me

it is the body telling me that there is some inflammation
I increase Vit D3 intake
go back to some bland basic meals for a couple of days and it resolves

since MC i have worn liners etc. due to auto immune skin condition i have 100% cotton fabric strips (that i make myself) between the skin and the liner
i can go weeks/months and not have leakage. but dont want to risk issues at work so I wear them every day

hope this helps
