HI Cheryl,

I'm only a little bit knowledgeable about histamine, Tex has helped with a lot of insight regarding this. I do know that when we are reacting the DAO in the gut that normally breaks down histamine doesn't or can't do its job well enough so we have to be diligent in eating fresh or heated from frozen as much as possible or build up of histamine in the gut can take place.

As in my situation I must have allowed histamine to continue to build and once it got to a certain level I couldn't get rid of it fast enough to not stop continuous symptoms. Another clue that a food may be bothering you is after or while you are eating a slight mucus will build in the back of the throat or the sinus will lightly run, some say this is normal while eating but I've noticed unless I'm eating something with a little spice/heat to it I do not 'normally' have a sinus issue so when I do I really look at what I just ate because our mouths are the fist line of defense to inflammation and by the time it hits our guts in can make it even worse (bathroom trips).

If you have any sinus symptoms or continuous mucus, like clearing your throat all the time it might be a sign you need to rid the gut of some histamine  A combination of Allegra, or benedryl at night or even the natural approach of HistaResist at bed time would be good to try. You would notice if it was helping within a day and if it should be taken for a few days. It's magic when I'm not blowing my nose or spitting mucus out!

I was tested to....I don't have allergies to things, but my body does like to create inflammation or give off a histamine response to unnecessary things from time to time.

Thank you so much Tex. I guess I will stay with this very bland diet to see if everything eventually calms down. My Chiropractic Neurologist ordered a Food Allergy Test from Cyrex Labs. I did discuss with him the test from EnteroLab but he really want to do the other one first. I should have insisted on Entero's. I am waiting on the Cyrex results. I have spent so much money on tests with no real answer, but I will probably get the EnteroLab one done too. To confirm, I need to be in the middle of a flare up when I get the EnteroLab test, correct?

Thanks so much,
Cheryl

Erica,
Thanks for the explanation. You did a good job. I do have the running nose often when I eat. No real mucus build up, however. I will continue to monitor it and consider your suggestions if it continues or worsens.

Thanks so very much,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

No, you don't have to be in a flare.

So I am back. Sorry but questions keep popping up. I will try and make it short. I am trying to stay on a very bland diet. So far mainly meat, yellow potatoes, white rice, and potatoes chips when I feel light headed or am hungry, which seems to be often (the hungry part). Can I safely eat Unsweetened Coconut Yogurt, a small amount of almond butter or coconut butter, (perhaps on a GF rice cake), and/or some Rice and or Corn Chex? I have had all of these in the past during my "good months" and have not noticed a problem. I use Coconut Milk as my milk so I am hoping coconut yogurt and coconut butter would be OK too. However, I do not want to cause a disaster! Or if you have any other snack ideas I would really appreciate them.

Thanks to all of you for all your help,
Cheryl

my suggestion - make meals and snacks as nutritious as possible. having protein and well cooked veges is much better option

coconut yogurt with minimal additions/ingredients may be a good idea but start really slow small small serves for 2-3 days.
do not have anything else new at the same time

Gabes, thanks so much for replying. I will follow your advice, but first I thought any vegetables other than potatoes was not a good idea since fiber was a no, no. I do peel the potatoes. So I guess my suggestion would be what vegetables are the safest? Also, I am not a great cook, so I don't know what else to do with meat, potatoes, and white rice to make them more nutritious and exciting since I need to keep the ingredients to a bare minimum. Are there ideas on this forum for really basic meals I can check out? I am just getting so discouraged.

Thanks for responding,
Cheryl

I’ve been on stage one diet and taking Budesonide for 3 months. Even eating a limited diet I’ve gained 7 pounds and I’m already overweight. I tried to taper to 6 mg Budesonide and within 2 days D was back😩 GI says I may need to stay on 9mg permanently. I don’t know what to do.

Here's my opinion: 9 mg of budesonide is a rather potent dose of budesonide for taking the rest of your life. Unless you're well up in the senior citizen age range, that dose will probably eventually cause significant osteoporosis problems. Have you tried substituting some other "safe" food for each of the items in your diet for several days (one at a time, of course)? Something in your diet is almost surely still a major problem. it may be cross-contaminated, or it may be the food (or drink, or medication, or supplement, etc.)itself.

Of course, if you have already tried everything, without success, then taking 9 mg of budesonide daily is surely better than just living with continual diarrhea. Diarrhea is not good for long-term health, either. Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do, because it's the best choice in the long run. You're fortunate to have a gastroenterologist who's willing to prescribe 9 mg of budesonide for long-term use.

I just turned 60 I don’t want to stay on Budesonide permanently. I eat only safe foods (chicken, rice, potatoes, canned green beans, canned Carrots, gluten free bread, tuna, banana and melon. Only snack is rice cakes. I tried a few different gf breads in case that was the problem, no difference) I haven’t tried adding foods yet. I do take SSRIs that I’ve been on for years and I don’t want to mess around with those. I guess I will just stay on the safe foods and try again to taper in a few months.

The SSRIs are probably causing you to react, and a full dose of budesonide provides control despite the SSRIs, but note that many of us can't tolerate any commercially-prepared GF bread before we've been in stable remission and our intestines have healed for a couple of years, or more. I'm also not aware of any other member here who is able to tolerate melons, although there may be some, and I'm just not aware of them. Melons (especially watermelons) contain certain chemicals that cause virtually all of us to react, even after we've healed.

At any rate, one or all of those issues are almost surely the reason why you require a full dose of budesonide to avoid reacting.

Wow somehow I thought I read melon was ok. I eat a ton of it! I will stop and also stop the gf bread. Thank you so much Tex

You should be able to tell whether that's helping or not within a few days, certainly within a week. After you're in remission for a while, you should be able to tolerate the GF bread. If a brand doesn't work, try another brand, because they all have different ingredients.
