Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Hi All,
I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for me. I have lately noticed that every time I eat meat, I experience allergy symptoms; sinus pressure, sinus headache, sneezing, and itching about 30 minutes after I eat fresh/freshly frozen meat (chicken, beef, ground turkey). It seems to be worse this year than it has in the past. The itching is worse through the night! Does anyone else have these symptoms? If so, how do you cope with it?
For years, I have had an unrelenting histamine intolerance, but it is worse now. I think because I am going through menopause and read that DAO production lowers once in menopause causing histamines to be worse?? My question is should I try to go vegetarian or only eat meat every 3 days? I am a major meat eater, so the thought of this is very depressing, but somedays, I can't function due to the symptoms. My headaches go into a migraine some days. Honestly, I wouldn't even know how to survive off of vegetables
So far, I take d3 drops, b-complex sublingual, dr dean's remyte in water, k2 drops, dr dean's remag in water, vit c drops (not enough probably), and use mag oil.
On a positive note, I usually get rosacea on my face during allergy months, but haven't noticed it lately. Yay!
I appreciate any help you can give!
Thank you all for listening!

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
I'd suggest that you might have mammalian meat allergy, except that it doesn't apply to fowl. Of course, chicken is often a high-histamine food, anyway, if it's not really fresh. Mammalian meat allergy is also referred to as an alpha gal allergy. In the U.S., it's caused by a bite from a Lone Star Tick. But this probably isn't your problem, because apparently it usually causes fairly severe symptoms.
My histamine problems were getting so bad that I finally tested a couple of DAO supplements. I found that they work for me. I also noticed that when pollen season is past, my histamine issues become much less of a problem. In case you don't subscribe to the Microscopic Colitis Foundation Newsletter, there's an article describing those trials in one of the back issues. If you want to read it, here's a direct link to that issue:

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Thank you Tex for your response. I feel like I get a worse response with chicken! We eat a lot of chicken at home. But how could I check for the mammalian meat allergy, just to make sure? I also thought about getting tested again for food intolerances at the Texas lab.
I tried 2 different kinds of DAO supplements and it only postponed my diarrhea until the med was out of my system. One of them kept me awake because it contained caffeine. Maybe, I gave up too easily!
This is so frustrating, I can’t even eat my safe foods without a reaction....I need to start over with my diet, I guess

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Chicken, ground turkey, and hamburger meat is what I typically eat. I was eating a lot of chicken but started noticing the reaction and thought it was due to it. Of course, the pollen is high here. I cook the meat immediately after I purchase it, but I am sure it has sat there for days. I am going to start going to a butcher again. I use to eat meat only from him when I started my diet, years ago.
I have the same reaction with tomatoes and peanut butter. I believe it to be histamine overload. Who knows? I thought by now with the supplements, my histamine intolerance would be much better....

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
yeah
chicken tends to be high histamine, and are feed lots of gluten and soy grain !!
ground meat tends to also be from cows that are fed lots of gluten and soy grain (and other trashy things )
try some small portions of wild game from reliable supplier, that you know the items will be grass fed
also try small portions of grass fed meats.
yes they are more expensive but if they dont cause inflammation they are worth it
hope this helps

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Thank you for your response, Gabes! I will try that! I think I have gotten complacent by masking my symptoms with antihistamines. Now that I am on summer break, I have decided to stop treating my symptoms with constant medication and get this under control....I so hope I can!

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
the other thing to look at is active B6 (P5P) and magnesium. hormone changes deplete magnesium
Fixing B6 and magnesium deficiencies resolved life long histamine/allergies for me

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
If you still want to test for alpha gal allergy, there's a blood test and a skin test. But with skin tests, a doctor (or allergist) can test for allergic reactions to individual types of red meat, because there are different kinds of allergies to meat.
Regarding retesting at EnteroLab: I originally tested negative to soy, but about 6 or 7 years later, after eating a lot of peanuts regularly, one day after eating peanuts my digestive system just stopped (it's called illeus). A retest showed that I had become sensitive to soy.

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Thanks Tex! After analyzing my symptoms for a few days and experimenting leaving out meat in my diet, I notice my symptoms are worse when I eat meat but still appear although less severe when I only eat vegetables. I still get the itching, congestion, and gas, but not headache.
I think it is due to seasonal allergies and the very hot, humid temps, along with lots of pollen. A couple of weeks ago, we had this odd cold front come through and I felt great. My husband reminded me of that yesterday! I had no symptoms and ate fine. Sitting by the pool under the trees is a big culprit, I believe. I honestly think I need to live in a bubble these days. I really don’t know how to resolve seasonal allergies....

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Beef is one of the few foods that causes me to get a headache. I'm surprised the pollen is still a problem there. It's been gone for about a month, here. But like you, I've noticed that I have to be extremely careful about what I eat during pollen season because once my histamine level goes over my threshold, it's an almost constant problem. After the pollen is gone, my diet can be relaxed a bit, and I can eat a few high-histamine foods without any problems. I haven't been doing it, although I probably should, but wearing a mask that's capable of filtering out pollen Whenever you're outdoors, would probably help a great deal. I've often wondered if these little portable air filtration gadgets (for use in the house) are worth buying, and using during pollen season.

Re: Meat Intolerance and Menopause
Sadly, there is pollen here in almost every month except Nov. - Jan., and part of Feb. Allergy doctors thrive where I live! I am very allergic to trees or so my allergist said several years ago. We have had some rain come through, so I am hoping it lowers our levels and my symptoms.
I also read that someone could have an allergy to B-12 and biotin. It is a long shot, but I am going to stop taking B-complex for a week to see if any of my symptoms go away. I take it daily, sublingually.
When I return to meat, I am going to go back to buy meat at a butcher where I know it is grass fed and more fresh. In the past, beef hasn't been very bothersome for me. I guess I will chalk it up to going through the changes and more allergic responses to seasonal allergies/histamines in foods, if stopping B-complex doesn't work.
As I have mentioned before, when I go to the beach, I feel like a different person. It is unbelievable! We almost have our house paid off, so I am looking for a 2nd place near a beach to buy. My husband is not supporting that idea We also have our first child set to graduate next year bound for engineering, so another home isn't very promising
Thanks again for listening!

Hi Martha,
A little while ago Tex suggested hista resist to me and by jolly it worked...I took it late afternoon or before bed https://www.vitamonk.com/pages/histaresist-70-off it worked so well I have not taken any allergy meds since then, and I was like you just an antihistamine junky lol, since February!
Take care and I hope you feel better by now

Hello Marcia! Hope you are doing well! So good to hear from you!
Thanks Erica, does the histaresist keep you awake? That was my problem with it and I felt like it only postponed my D once the pill was out of my system. I need to try it again now that I have stopped red meat, but the caffeine free version.
So I have completely cut out red meat which was really hard for me. I am still having some histamine issues but not near what I was experiencing with red meat. My headaches are more dull, a lot less frequent, and my itching has greatly reduced. Also, my D has reduced too! I am just getting so tired of chicken and turkey
I grilled salmon last night because I needed a change and woke up with my dull headache and sinus issues....
I am going to give red meat another try when winter sets in to see what happens. My husband thinks the headaches are from the tyramine that is in the meat. My body is so delicate
