ScienceNordic pill coming...protects against effects of Gluten

Post by Erica P-G »

This could be a real game changer in the near future.

I hope there is light at the end of the tunnel where this is concerned, as it could mean MC/LC/CC may get support to not worry so much about gluten in our diets. This is such an exhausting disease, and this would be one less thing to worry about.

Hi Erica,

Here's why I'm not going to hold my breath. Researchers seem to be relentless in their search for the holy Grail of celiac disease. Unfortunately, that Grail doesn't exist. Here's the problem: in order to provide effective protection against celiac disease, a pill would have to provide 100% effectiveness. Otherwise, damage to the villi of the small intestine will slowly accumulate. Whether this background Inflammation exceeds a patient's personal threshold, to trigger a reaction, depends on a number of factors, primarily their sensitivity level.

As most of us are well aware, the vast majority of us are capable of reacting to tiny amounts of gluten — even molecular amounts. Pills and potions are simply not capable of protecting us against that level of exposure. They may be 99.999% effective in the laboratory, and their research write up looks great, but the problem is, that tiny fraction of gluten that escapes the effectiveness of their pill or potion, is still enough to either cause us to react immediately, or slowly create a background level of inflammation that will either eventually cause us to react, or cause us to develop other autoimmune diseases.

Pills designed to address gluten sensitivity and celiac disease, are already on the market. And they definitely will help, if you're eating out, for example, and are served a meal that's cross contaminated with gluten. But they won't protect our intestines 100% from damage, and they won't provide protection if we eat a significant amount of gluten, such as a normal meal might contain. If we try to play that game, the damage to our intestines will continue to build up, until it eventually triggers a flare.

Years ago, Dr. Fasano announced with great fanfare that he and his team had developed a compound that could be used to prevent celiac reactions. But as they developed the project, And they discovered that there was no way to provide 100% protection, they sold the patent to another company. That company worked on it for a few more years, and eventually brought a product to market. But do you see raving reviews for the effectiveness of that product, and similar products, on celiac sites today?

Of course you don't, because those products are simply not practical. Yes, they can help, especially if we're eating a meal that's claimed to be gluten-free, but it's actually cross-contaminated with gluten. No, those pills won't allow us to safely eat gluten in significant amounts. That's simply never going to happen.

I apologize, for raining on your parade. I realize that's disappointing news, but I sincerely believe it's better to be disappointed, than to be sick, from gluten exposure as a result of unrealistic expectations.

I agree with Tex (and sorry to add to the rain on the parade)
sadly mainstream medicine / scientists do not fully understand inflammation and the bodies reaction to triggers.

it took a LONG time for mainstream medicine to acknowledge non celiac gluten sensitivity

for many of us here, even having protection against gluten doesnt resolve the issue - alot of the yummy things that have gluten, also have dairy, sugar, yeast and other trigger ingredients

It's ok Tex & Gabes, a little rain isn't going to melt me

Well perhaps I'm being overly optimistic :???: I hope some day more light is shed on our MC and something truly extraordinary has a break through. This particular discovery may not happen in my life time.

I sure hope some day, like the discovery of Celiac (which I agree with you Gabes, it took a really long time for that to be acknowledged as a Real thing driven by gluten) this will be taken more seriously as well.

I guess I'm encouraged that there are still scientists in the Norwegian and Israeli areas that continue to look into why our bodies do what they do in regards to gluten.

Such a complex undertaking :pcguru:

another aspect to why i dont think these medications will be the saviour

these are my thoughts i have no science per say to back it up

we are not reacting to gluten persay - we are reacting to modern day wheat!
the genetic changes to the grain, the chemicals, the growing process, the grinding process and the food preparation process.

There is an a local organic bakery, they grow organic wheat, grind it and prepare it to traditional methods, and bake to traditional methods (not rushed) I can eat their products with no reaction!
i only do this once every few months.

the current day food supply is not about nutrition, it is about making the product as cheap as possible, as fast as possible.
that is one of the reasons the why auto immune illness are more prevalent now compared to 20 years ago, and 40 years ago.
