Re: Covid vaccine

Post by tex »

I haven't heard any news on my friends, so I assume that nothing has significantly changed. I'm not sure what the vaccination rate is currently, but last week, the county I live in had a 38% vaccination rate, and they currently have the highest infection rate (by far) around.

I really don't know what the proper timing should be on wisdom teeth extraction, and COVID vaccinations. I wonder if your dentist might know. I agree with you that school reopening is probably going to be a nightmare in many locations, and when the kids bring the virus home, many parents are going to get it, despite the fact that they've been vaccinated. The vaccine helps, but it's obviously not capable of protecting us in such a situation. I read somewhere (probably medscape) yesterday, that (worldwide, I assume) over a million and a half kids have already lost parents to the virus.

And I'm like you, looking forward to another "booster" shot for COVID. But until the government officially announces a policy on this, I'm not sure that we can even get another vaccination. And if we could, it probably would cost big bucks, but I'm just guessing. I have a routine doctor appointment in a couple of weeks. If I can remember, I'll ask him about the possibility of getting revaccinated.

Martha
I am not rushing for vaccination at this stage - it will be at least September before my category of people ( location, age and workplace) can get access to Pfizier the focus at the moment is capital cities, health care workers, emergency services etc.

sadly east coast Australia are in a bad way with the Delta strain. the worst area is the state where i am based. I am 2 hours from the largest capital city in Australia where things are quite bad.
We have been in semi lockdown with strict rules (wearing masks indoors, compulsory check in and check out to all venues including workplaces) for the past month - and given the current transmission rates will be that way for at least another month.

Thankfully we have no active cases in my area. If cases do become active in our area there is big risk that we will have strict shutdowns, my workplace will be forced to closed.

I suppose I need to add this update about my two friends who were in the Intensive care unit at the local hospital for so long: neither one of them survived, unfortunately. And because the Delta variant is surging so badly in this area, it's unlikely that I'll be able to attend their funerals, either.

This decade will probably be recorded in the history books as one of the saddest the human race has experienced in centuries, but I'm no historian, so I could certainly be wrong.

All my best,

I am so sorry, Tex, that is certainly heartbreaking news.

They sure gave it a good long fight.

I hope you can run down to a CVS to get the booster. My sister just did on Monday.

Take care and thank you for updating us.

Tex
my deepest sympathies to you regarding your friends.
and empathise regarding restrictions on attending funeral.

20 years ago we thought that the 9-11 events and subsequent attacks on innocent population and the changes in livestyles was considered harsh

the impact of Delta variant and how governments are reacting to it. - I am struggling to describe it
here in Aus, vaccines are being made mandatory for many many industries, any articles or news stories about not vaccinating are being removed (very china like) and practitioners de-registered
at this stage to keep working to pay the bills I won't be able to avoid getting the vaccine

My state has been in semi lockdown since Late June, and 2 weeks ago restrictions changed that I am not able to go more than 5km from my home.
hopefully by Christmas I may be able to socialise with friends/family.

Thanks Jen,

I appreciate your sympathy.

I thought the booster wasn't going to be available until eight months after the last vaccine.

Thanks Gabes,

I appreciate your kind words. In the US, we currently don't have many restrictions, except for certain overseas flights, but the virus is really running amuck in the central part of Texas, and many other parts of the country. I could go pretty much anywhere I want, but I have absolutely no desire to do so, the way things are going. The hospital ICUs here locally are full, and patients are being transported to wherever they can find an empty bed in a hospital. Many hospitals are setting up temporary treatment tents, but they don't have the nurses or doctors to staff them.

Tex,
My sister got her first and second shots in December.

This is what i read today;

"The FDA determined that transplant recipients and others with a similar level of compromised immunity can receive a third dose of the vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna at least 28 days after getting their second shot.

Meanwhile, medical experts outlined plans to begin administering booster shots for all Americans with Pfizer or Moderna vaccines beginning the week of Sept. 20.

The booster shots should be given eight months after a person received their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna shot in order to gain longer-lasting protection against the coronavirus as the delta variant spreads across the country."

Gabes, That is awful! I do hope that you will be able to see family/friends by Christmas. Is your place of employment requiring all employess to be vaccinated?

Jen,
the business owner is anti vaccines. Sadly the industry we are in are mandating vaccines.
no jab no job
the government has done it in a sneaky way, the government are not mandating it, but a collective of industry and politicians are setting rules that mean to keep your job in that industry you have to be vaccinated.
this has only happened in the past week, so it is overwhelming to many in the population

the lock downs in Sydney, some people have not worked since Mid June. about 50% had no intention of getting vaccinated. now to return to work, they have to get vaccinated.

the health system in my state is at its limit due to Delta variant.
there are many work areas in the capital city such as transport, couriers/logistics, and some wards in hospitals that only have 25% staff available to work as large groups are in 14 day isolation

there are permit systems to travel interstate
my state is 'blacklisted'to the rest of Aus

Jen,

No wonder your sister already qualified for a booster, she must have received one of the first vaccines in the entire country. I don't believe they were even available in Texas that early. I believe my second vaccination was on March 23, so it will be late in November before I will qualify for a booster. In the meantime, I see medical research articles that indicate these vaccines may be only about 50 something percent effective against the Delta variant after about five months, without a booster.

Gabes,

Our states in the US are run by governors. A month or so ago our governor in Texas issued a proclamation that no business, school, or any other entity could mandate the wearing of masks. The streets here In some of the major cities, especially the capital, always have lots of protesters, advocating for this, or that, or whatever appeals to them on any particular day. Now the streets are crowded with mothers demanding that all students should be required to wear masks in school, to protect kids like theirs, many of whom are immunocompromised — and on the other side of the street are mobs of people protesting against the use of masks.

Virtually every small business in the state is struggling to stay open, and doing everything they can to hire new employees, including hiring bonuses and higher salaries, but nobody wants to work. I reckon they'd rather stand out in the street and protest. Bars and restaurants would like to be able to require patrons to show proof of vaccination, or at least proof of a negative COVID test, but the governor has forbidden that, also. Now the governor has the Delta variant, so not much news is coming from his office, these days. That appears to have toned things down a notch or two for the moment.

Tex,
My sister and my husband are frontline healthcare workers. Both of them recieved one of the first two doses in Decemeber, it was kind of scary, not knowing much back then!
My sister is a brittle diabetic and has pretty bad asthma. She went to CVS on Monday and they gave it to her.
You only have to wait 28 days after your last shot to get the booster (if i am understanding correctly) if you qualify for being 'immunocompromised."

Gabes,
My God Gabes, you must feel so trapped!!!

Its pretty much the same in Calif as Tex is discribing in Texas, people protesting on each side, except my state is trying to recall our governor..haha
Businesses are falling apar, like Tex said "no ne wants to work"
Hospitals are reaching their limit capacity and the ICU's are understaffed. They are briding the staff they have with BONUS MONEY so that they will stay over and do double shifts. Its a mess!!

Do you have a plan? Are you scheduled to get the vaccine?

For now I have made the appointments ( 1st 30 Oct, 2nd late Nov)
and will make a decision over the next 6 weeks

the way the rules are going, If I want to attend events linked to my hobbies/interests, vaccination will be a requirement.

like many countries, government and affiliated agencies are in semi panic response mode, there is no long term proactive decision making happening
it is, what it is

That's certainly the problem here. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is supposed to be the federal agency in charge of health issues here. But ever since COVID-19 came along, they've been making decisions and recommendations based on knee-jerk reactions, and flawed science, and many Americans don't trust them anymore, because one week they'll recommend doing one thing, and the next week they'll tell us to do just the opposite.

Right off the bat, their first mistake was a doozy — they recommended that nobody in the public should wear a mask. Then they reversed themselves and said that everyone should wear a mask. By then, most of us had already lost all confidence in them. To some of us, they appear to be about as goofy as a bunch of clowns — the last place we would go for medical advice. :millianlaugh:
