Hi there.
I have a question about Pepto Bismal. I'm in Australia and we don't have it here, so I'm not familiar with it. I've ordered some from the US, as I feel like I want to try something else to help me along. I'm in wk 8 of completely safe foods after my flare up from a virus in March (it took me 2mths to get realise I really did need to go back to absolute basics). I'm doing really well, but not as well as I was doing last year at the equivalent point after my initial onset, hence wanting to try Pepto.
My question is, how many tablets do I take a day? I know the "treatment" is 8 a day for 8wks, but I don't think I'll need that much. I don't have D anymore, but soft serve and a bit looser if extra stressed, or I have a bit too much fat, cheat, etc. I'm currently taking half an Immodium daily. I know Pepto can also cause constipation. Do I start with one? Two a day? Three? I read it also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is why I want to try it as I feel I need some extra help there. How do I know how many to take?
Thanks for any advice.
Alice :)

Re: Pepto Bismol dosage???
Hi Alice,
The answer to that would have to be a guess, because the minimum dose needed will depend on your degree of inflammation, and we have no way of knowing that. If you're going to use it that way, you'll probably have to determine the dose by trial and error. Too little will not be effective, and too much may cause constipation symptoms.
Please note that if you hope to control your symptoms with your diet, cheating is not an option. You have to be strict with your diet. If you persist in cheating, I would be surprised if you're going to be able to resolve your symptoms. Microscopic colitis is a very unforgiving disease — it doesn't tend to cut us any slack. A few people are lucky enough to have lower than normal sensitivity levels, especially after they're in remission, but most of us have an immune system that become so hypersensitive when we're reacting, that we have to be extremely meticulous about our diet, or we may never get to remission.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Re: Pepto Bismol dosage???
Hi Tex,
Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought, good to hear confirmation of that.
Re "cheating", all good, I know that. The first time was last night, that's all. I know and trust my body and its ability to heal and know I will be ok.
Thank you

Re: Pepto Bismol dosage???
Good morning, Alice. I'm a Pepto success story. My GI started me on 8/day for 8 weeks, but after a few weeks I cut back to 6/day due to C. If you don't think that you need that many, start out at what you think will work. As Tex said, dietary changes are necessary to stay in remission. I'm in remission for 7 years after the Pepto without any other medication, but I also made drastic dietary changes.

Hi Marcia,
Thanks so much for your reply. I am going to message you with a few more questions. It's great to hear from people who've already used this.
