Pig Roast

Post by Marcia K »

Good morning, friends. This isn't a vent, just sharing with friends who will understand. My husband & I went to a birthday party that was a catered pig roast (we didn't know that ahead of time). There was a lot of good food, drinks and desserts. I ate lunch before we went and I had my dinner packed to eat in the car on the way home (it was a 1.5 hour drive home). The party was at 2:00 p.m. A friend of my husband's drove along with us. My husband told him previously that I have to watch what I eat due to health reasons. His reply at that time was "her choice." Because I'm thin I'm guessing he assumes that I don't eat to stay thin. While I sat there watching everyone eat their piled high plates of food I picked at a little fruit that was the only thing available that I could eat. He kept making comments like "aren't you going to eat, your plate wouldn't have blown away if you would have put more food on it, etc." It was tiresome. There were other people at the table that I didn't know and it was making me uncomfortable. I am used to not eating at functions like this, but to have someone sitting there making comments was hard to take. I let it go, it wasn't worth it to me to put him in his place and I'm thankful that I'm not around him very often. He's a former co-worker of my husband's and he said "that's him" so he's used to his boorish behavior. On another note, we're having a picnic at our house on Saturday. My friends will be bringing gf food, and I'm okay with that. They understand that I won't eat what they're having and they won't make comments about it. Have a great week, everyone!

Oh Marcia i feek bad for you.
I am only 11 months in and every single family gathering/event, i am hit with the exact same thing.
It doesnt matter how many times i tell my sisters that i am on a restricted diet they still continue to make negative comments.
I sit there with my Costco turkey, overcooked carrots and white rice in a tupperware, while everyone else pigs out.
I guess they dont realize how isolated we already feel and that the comments just make us feel worse. Like kicking a dog when they are down.
The worse is when we are there for more than like 3 hours, and i have to eat the EXACT SAME THING again.......oh boy!!
Like you, i blow it off, so tired of having to explain myself. I am healthier than all of them. If they want to ingest gluten, have at it!
Enjoy your picnic on Saturday with your real friends!!!

Thanks, Jen. I am looking forward to Saturday and being able to relax with good friends and know that it's about the fellowship, not the food. I love this group so much because we're all on the same journey and we understand what we're going through. Thank goodness for Costco turkey! That's what I ate on the drive home. I'm glad that you found it, too.

Marcia,

So sorry you had to endure that situation. It's more than bad enough that you did not get to indulge like everyone else. Pig roast sounds really yummy to me.

Anyhow, I'm going to Costco tomorrow, and I was wondering about the turkey you're mentioning. Is it a whole turkey, or turkey roast/breast, fresh/frozen, etc.? We usually get the fresh, roasted chicken when we go there, which I do fine with.

Have fun at your picnic!!!

Thanks,
Kari

Kari,

This is it:

Thankfully, Marcia recommended it to me last year. It's really good and minimal ingredients.

Hi, Kari. I'm sorry I didn't see your post previously. Thanks Jen for sharing the link! The turkey is nice to have on hand because all you have to do is slice it and you're good to go. I had it yesterday while my friends were eating the kabobs that a friend made. We had a wonderful picnic with lots of good food that they enjoyed and I was happy to share the day with them. Have a great week, everyone!

So glad you had a successful picnic Marcia - good to hear!!!

My SO's sister, Sara, had a bday party in her beautiful garden yesterday. The family knows about my issues, so they made an amazing effort to accommodate me. There were fresh veggies and salads from their gardens, and they were grilled, or made with acceptable salad dressing. There was also marinated and grilled chicken and beef - acceptable to my crazy system. The only thing I couldn't partake in was the bday cake, which was a flourless chocolate cake, but had dairy and soy.

The crowning glory for me was a couple of slices of Manchego cheese, which I haven't had in 11 years, since I started down this tough road. It seems that I can now tolerate a little bit of goat/sheep's milk cheese.

Enjoy your weekend everyone and stay healthy. Thanks for being here :).

HI, Jen. We're all in this together & I appreciate you covering for me!

Kari, that is so awesome! What a great day for you! I've never had anyone make anything special for me because I think they're afraid that they'll make me ill. I'm good with that, but it would be awesome not to have to take my own food all of the time. One of my friends has a stressful job and is a caretaker for an elderly relative and she said Saturday was good for her soul. It was for me too, and I'm very thankful for this time together.
