Methyl Mercury excretion/milk/antibiotics
Hi all, especially Celia,
Just read over on Braintalk, a DAN report (autism) that told of a study which had shown that methyl mercury excretion in rats was slowed by a diet of milk and/or antibiotics. The antibiotics were more slowing than milk by themselves, and the combination was much more slowing. The authors pointed out that methyl mercury excretion would be even slower in humans.
Also, bacterial flora de-somethingorother this substance whereas yeast does the opposite. I suppose that this is a possible explanation as to why the difference in excretion rates.
It also said that autistic kids tended to have a larger amount of E.coli in their intestines.
At the time the study was done on the rats, they were babies, so their only diet at that time was milk.
Anyone wish to try to piece some of this information into a theory about gs/celiac/mc? Whatcha think Nurse Celia? Ha!
Yours, Luce

Luce,
Developing a theory is probably a little beyond me! I beleive my dentist told me that mercury functions like an anitbiotic and has that effect on your gut flora, diminishing the good guys.
Usually, there are several factors in chronic illness and I beleive the heavy metals are one piece along with others like genetics, a trigger event, etc.
Be well!
Celia

Hi you two!
Yet another good reason why milk may not be good for us! This is interesting......especially given the major problem with mercury-contaminated fish and the recommendation that we eat at least 2 fish servings a week for the omega 3s. Since I don't drink milk, I will not worry so much about the mercury in the future now that I've read this. An interesting study would be to look at mercury levels in milk drinkers vs. non milk-drinkers. Thanks for sharing.
Love,
Polly

Polly,
If you are concerned about the mercury in fish you might like to check out www.vitalchoice.com They offer high quality fish with lower levels of mercury and no preservatives like sulfites. It's pricey, but that's where I'm getting my fish for the time being.

Polly and anyone interested in bone health,
Check out the Vital Choices (magazine on line through the website where Celia gets her fish), I think it's called, article about Bone Fracture prevention, and inside it, you'll find a couple of excellent links about Vit D, and Polly, there's some good stuff about Calcium I think you'll find interesting.
You've probably already read these studies, but anyway, it's verrrry interesting.
Thanks Celia! By the way, how is the quality of the fish? How long does it take to receive yours, and what do you find the nicest size to order for a regular refrigerator freezer? Also, what would they charge for that size?
Also, noticed they had some interesting recipes on their website.
Welp, it's time to get up and feed us some Vit D gelcaps! Ha!
Just had an idea -- do you suppose that the amount of calcium in the bones of a fish is the exact proportion of calcium needed for the amount of Vit D that would also be in that same fish? Balance, ya know.
Yours, Luce

Luce,
The vital choice fish is delicious. We usually order the salmon and the tuna, but I can't remember which size we get. They send it by courier packed in ice (dry ice, I think). It usually takes two days, three at most. We get the tracking number so we can follow it online. Of course, you want to be at home the day it arrives because you don't want it sitting on your porch for hours and hours and hours. A little while is fine.
Our freezer is always stuffed to the gills so to speak since we get free range chicken, lamb, and beef in quantity too from local farms.
Thanks for the mention of the articles on the website. I want to look those up.
Be well,
Sandra

Celia!!!
Thanks you so much for the referral to the Vital Choice website. I spent some enjoyable time there this morning and ordered some goodies.
I had all but given up eating canned tuna, which is one of my favorites and so convenient. I knew that albacore in general had higher mercury levels but had recently read that light tuna was also high because of the way it is fished. So I had just stopped eating it all together. Now I can have it again and be assured of low mercury levels. Oh JOY!.
I have always eaten canned tuna in WATER because the commercial brands use soybean or other oils I can't tolerate, but V.C tuna is packed in olive oil! I can't believe it! I do great with olive oil and it is SO healthy compared to the others. And what a great way to help keep our weight up - a healthy, hi-cal snack food! (I weigh more than you - 118 and now holding since on the caveman diet - I'm 5'5 and 1/2" tall).
Also, I love the fresh salmon-in-the pouch product! How utterly convenient! I can take it to restaurants and add it to salads to have a healthy meal. Or just have it in my car for a snack. Did you know it has a 10 year shelf-life (no refrig. required)?
This shelf-life really struck me! Have you seen the recommendations from the top CDC experts that we should all have a one-month's supply of food/water/medications on a shelf somewhere at home for if/when the bird flu strikes? Well, I had been thinking about this and just couldn't come up with ideas for a whole month's worth of non-refrig. food for me, since I can't eat any processed foods. It's easy for hubby/son - just stock up on cans of things like ravioli, spaghetti, beef stew, etc. Anyway, I could stock up on these pouches and the canned tuna/salmon and have the healthiest, tastiest food of all!!!! How about that?
Thanks you so much for sharing this info. I am thrilled!
Luce,
I am heading back over to the website to check out the article you mentioned as well as the recipes. I was so busy ordering that I missed those. Thanks. I'll bet your "balance" comment is dead-on!
