Alochol

Post by Annecz »

Hello,

I'm six months into remission with a very restrictive diet. I have a big event coming and would like to better understand what occassional alcohol may be considered safest. I've had some preservative-free/organic red wine without issue, but that's never available in restaurants. Some postings have suggested distilled spirits are safest, but it's not clear what's best to add to those--juices, sodas, carbination, etc. I've been avoiding. I've read some people are good with champagne or Prosecco, but again those are carbonated. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.

Thank you,
Anne

some spirits are distilled on grains so best to avoid these!

for spirits that are not distilled on grains having soda water or tonic water is a good option
I would avoid juice or carbonated drinks due to the preservatives/colourings they would contain

with ALL wines/champagnes there is no one safe variant. it depends on the manufacture process and types of preservatives they use.
(it can also depend on what they store/age the wine during manufacture)

in my early stages of healing I wasn't able to tolerate Australian made champagne/sparkling but could consume French made with no issues

if there is no safe option at a venue - I dont drink alcohol. not worth risking a flare.

Hello. I rarely drink alcohol, but I can tolerate white wine. I've had Moscato & Pinot Grigio without any issues. Never more than a small amount, though.

Thank you Gabes and Marcia for your responses. I'll tread carefully with any potential alcohol. I am curious that soda water or tonic water was mentioned as possibly using with distrilled spirits; but since they're carbonated, would they not pose a potential issue?

Thank you,
Anne

Hello Anne,

I see that no one answered your carbonation question. I'm not sure this is everyone's experience, but in my case, when my MC was active, gas buildup was a constant problem, and carbonated drinks just made it worse. After I was in remission, carbonated drinks didn't normally cause problems.

Hi, Anne. I agree with Tex. I've had club soda, but not until I was in remission for a few years. It didn't bother me then. I don't drink it often, but if I'm around people who are having alcohol, I'll have a club soda.

Thank you Tex and Marcia. I appreciate your answering the carbonation question. Sounds like I need to wait a bit longer before trying a bit of soda water.
