Hi,

Welcome to the group. The timeline suggests that you may have developed microscopic colitis because of the antibiotics (or other medications) used during (and after) your heart valve surgery. Fortunately, most of us are able to control the disease by changing our diet. The tricky part is finding which foods are causing us to react, and avoiding them, 100%. Cutting out gluten is a good place to start, because all of us are sensitive to gluten. It usually takes at least several months to get the antibody levels triggered by gluten down to a level where we can detect our other food sensitivities. You've probably already seen the section on "Guidelines for Recovery". If not, you can find it here:

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Welcome gator9t9!

You have found a great forum! Led by Tex, this forum has many helpful folks and informational threads that can help get you to a healing gut state. Sure did help for me. Spend some time searching this forum and you will learn a lot. Tex (Wayne Persky) really understands this disease and wrote a book called "Microscopic Colitis". I highly recommend you read it.

I lost 40 pounds (200 to 160) before I was diagnosed properly with an investigative (non-routine) colonoscopy. Diet is the key to controlling MC. I have though used the GI steroid Budesonide twice to jumpstart the healing, once initially after diagnosis and again after having a relapse. A very slow taper off of Budesonide is highly recommended if you decide to go that route.

I had two good years after initial healing, then after healing from my one relapse, I have been stable with NO symptoms for many years now and back to my ideal weight so there IS hope, and plenty of it. I have carefully been able to reintroduce many foods to my diet. Everybody is different as to what works for them, but there are many commonalities including elimination of gluten for starters as Tex already mentioned.

Ask anything, all the best to you and please keep us updated!

Hi Gator,
Welcome! 😃
You will be ok now! Finding this forum will help so much.
I’ve been around for 8 years now….
Tex is wonderful and if you get Gabes to chime in she’s a goldmine of info too.
Heed being Gluten free…the eggs, dairy and soy may factor in but you won’t know until the gluten is out of the body….which can take up to 4 months maybe more depending on your cellular makeup and if you are able to stay away from it as cleanly as possible.
I’m 55…my mom is 75….I know the struggle with change but I was able to get my mom on the VitD3 and Magnesium regimen and even after her sigmoid surgery from having diverticulitis she is doing much better. I can’t get her to change from eating gluten but including those two items has helped her overall health.
I wish you much healing 😊
