Tylenol Gluten Free????

Post by LauraGld »

Morning Tex, Gabes and all,

I recently heard that Tylenol has withdrawn its claim to be GF because of shared manufacturing facilities. I take Tylenol frequently for relief from my psoriatic arthritis. See quote below and links.

"Tylenol, with its active ingredient acetaminophen, may be the best-known pain relief and headache relief treatment available over-the-counter. Previously, Tylenol had distributed a long list of products it considered gluten-free.

However, manufacturer McNeil-PPC retracted that list and instead issued this statement: "Although we don't add gluten or gluten containing grains to our products, we cannot confirm that the product or any ingredients in TYLENOL products are gluten free. Your safety is of great concern to us; therefore, we strongly recommend that you first consult your doctor before using any product if you have a form of gluten intolerance or sensitivity."

Here's the link where I found the info: https://www.verywellfit.com/gluten-free ... ers-562382

Even adhering closely to my limited diet I still get occasional flares that are usually resolved fairly quickly but I have never been able to clear up my scalp psoriasis

If Tylenol is possibly contaminated then this could be the unknown that infiltrates my diet.

In the same article the offer some acetaminophen thet are gf....CVS brand being one of them. There is also a company that makes GF products. https://www.genexa.com and their acetaminophen is not expensive and available online including Amazon.

Anyone heard of this???? Gabes? Tex?

Best to all,

Good morning, Laura. The extra strength Kirkland Acetaminophen from Costco is labeled as gf. I don't know about Tylenol. I don't really take anything for pain, but I do keep it on hand. If I have a headache, peppermint essential oil rubbed on my forehead and temples always does the trick.

Hi Laura
as I am in Australia I am unable to comment or assist. We have different products here and much stricter product labelling laws here in Australia.

one of the aspects of these labelling laws is in relation to a product claiming to be Gluten free
In the USA - a product can be gluten free with up to 20 parts per million of gluten, in Australia to be 'Gluten Free' the product must have less than 5 parts per million

I hope you can find suitable gluten free pain relief

Hi Gabes....I wish our laws for labeling were as strict as the laws in Australia. Pharmaceutical and large corporations have lots of power and influence in the US :(. Labeling is not so transparent in many cases.

Thanks Marcia! Good to know about the acetaminophen at Costco is gf :). I hope by getting this source of gluten out of my system will help. It's frustrating when you have been so good about removing all gluten from you diet and then something like this happens 😡

All the best,

Morning Gabes,
I did check the celiac list and they still have them listed as safe. That's one of the reasons I came to this list to see if anyone else had seen this latest article on Tylenol. I've found a few sources for gluten free acetaminophen so I'm just going to use that...better safe than sorry :)

Best,
