B vitamins

Good morning all,
I have been feeling much better taking a Vit C supplement for the last week or so so I am now trying to address my low Vit B1 thiamin test result.

B1 was 60 nmol (nl is 70-180)
B6 was 73 nmol (nl is 20-125)
B12 was 481 pg/mL (nl is 211-911)

Would a Bcomplex supplement be recommended or just a pure B1 supplement since the other Bs were well within normal range? I have read a lot of posts recommending the Thorne B complex and methyl guard and am trying to figure out what a good starting point is. I dont know if I have methylation problems so would I just start with a Bcomplex? I honestly feel the Vit C has helped my stomach pains a lot and I am making some progress finally that was being more elusive on strict diet alone, much as I dislike supplements I think I may need some due to actual deficiencies.

I certainly don't claim to be an expert on vitamins, but If I were only low on one particular vitamin, I would probably try to supplement only the one that is low. Usually, over supplementing most vitamins shouldn't be a problem, because the body conveniently disposes of any unneeded excesses. However, I'm not sure that applies to each and every vitamin known to science, and it also only applies to people who have normal liver and kidney function.

Minerals are more critical. For example, although taking more calcium or magnesium than needed might not be a problem for most people (because excess amounts are purged by the kidneys), for those who are supplementing vitamin D, especially, too much calcium or magnesium supplementation can cause serious problems (cardiovascular issues) for those who have compromised kidney function. Additionally, too much calcium for patients who are magnesium deficient, can lead to cardiac issues (even cardiac arrest, in some cases), regardless of kidney function status.

As long as our kidneys and liver are working normally, though, reasonable surpluses of most supplemented vitamins or minerals shouldn't cause any problems. If they did, I'd have been dead long ago, because now that I've been in remission for many years, I take a lot of vitamins, because I've been eating a very limited diet for many years. Basically, eggs, pork, and corn — no vegetables, for example, and I have significant methylation issues, so I have to take the activated forms of vitamins. My labs usually look good, especially for somebody my age.

Turns out finding a supplement of just thiamin/B1 that is also free of all enterolab allergens is proving elusive.

Mostly it appears all B vitamins are lumped together into some B compex vitamin.

I did find 1 ingredient organic moringa leaf powder which is high in thiamin but of course not as high dosage as the other B1 supplements.

Anyone tried moringa powder?

And why do all vitamins have weird corn or soy derived ingredients? Or are synthesized from petroleum or other gross things?

Searching for safe supplements is exhausting! So many options and they are all no good :hammer:

Thanks Gabes! I checked it out and It does have some rice bran extract and enterolabs showed I reacted to rice but I guess since it does not have any of the big 4 allergens it should be ok?

And the “vegetable glaze” is ok even though they don't say what vegetable?


I don't want to be too paranoid but when you mention that even tiny amounts of allergens in things like soap can cause people problems, i worry about anything I put in my mouth :(.

your concerns are understandable

I am ok with rice, so that is why I went with this product
that stage that I am at, I can handle minuscule amounts of items in supplements

we cant avoid every toxin/irritant 100% of the time
I work on avoiding the major ones and minimising contact with the others
There might other brands that have the active form with different excipients search for the active form of B1.
there are two or three other MC safe brands that have similar product at iherb.

in the early stages of healing when I was avoiding soy 100%, I got some supplements from compounding pharmacy
if you can not find suitable pre packaged product that suits your intolerances that might be the other option
