Sandoz Cholestyramine

Post by HockeyMom »

Good morning people

Those of us who have to use Sandoz cholestyramine know that actually getting your hands on it can be challenging at times. You hear all sorts of things...they don’t make it anymore, distributor issues, they shot down the satellite/fill in the blank with whatever other conspiracy theory you’ve heard!

I think I mentioned that my pharmacist mixed in a box of Epic branded cholestyramine last time for me to try. It was fine but I was somewhat confused as the packaging and product looked exactly like Sandoz. Closer inspection revealed that on the packet, Epic Pharma LLC was listed as the manufacturer for Sandoz.

A phone call to Sandoz this morning confirms that they are not in the cholestyramine game any longer, Epic is. So I guess we need to stop saying Sandoz and say Epic from now on. I left a message on Epics website asking about this today....as cholestyramine wasn’t listed on said website.

Just an update folks...carry on!

I just received an email response from Epic confirming that they have been the manufacturer for Sandoz cholestyramine in the past and they are the new distributor for all previous Sandoz cholestyramine products. They gave me the new item numbers (NDC) for the 4 products if anyone needs those.

Thank you so much for sharing this information. When I picked up my prescription last week, Sam’s Club told me that would be the last time I could get it. What they will carry is not Epic so I will check with them to see if they can get it.

Laine,

Thanks for posting all this information. It will surely be valuable for a lot of MC patients in the future.

You are welcome Tex! I picked up my next 3 month supply today and my pharmacist was excited that it was so easy! That wonderful man had been really working it to cobble enough Sandoz together for me recently  ...bless Artie for all his help!

Hi Laine: since you seem to be the Cholestyramine expert, I have a question. Have you or anyone else out there in MCland had experience with the Adjanta Pharma brand? I was previously using Epic which I found pretty palatable. I changed locations and ended up through a prescription transfer with the Adjanta from India which I find horrible by comparison. It’s so “adhesive “ that it’s hard not to choke on it. It seems to be working but I dread taking it. Also, can I return unopened boxes of the stuff to CVS?

I’ve never heard of that brand.... I’ve not had any luck returning unused packets though I did ask! I actually gave lots of boxes of another generic brand to a co worker who was having diarrhea and urgency issues after having his gall bladder removed. It really helps him out, and he uses very little daily. Once he burns through all that I gave him, he will get his own prescription for it.

Hello!
Can someone tell me the difference between the light orange and orange cholestyramine? I saw all the NDC numbers and I want to ask my doctor for one but I'm not sure which one to ask for. Thank you!!!

It helps to put boiling water in the Cholestyramine mixture which helps clumping. Regards, Dorothy

I am also having a very difficult time finding a pharmacy who carries Epic in light (42806-270-95) here in Nashville, TN. Where did you happen to find it? Where are other folks able to transfer their Rxs to?

Thanks!!

I am glad you are able to get it from Walgreens. Our Walgreens here informed me they went to a new ordering/supply system that prevents them from being able to specify a manufacturer, even if the physician states do not substitute. It came back as "unable to supply." My quest continues!

When I was in Coastal Carolina Hospital, Bluffton, SC, for my seizure disorder, they gave me tablets instead of liquid for my Cholesterolmine. I'm taking 7 packets and I am tired of the oral suspension. I boil my water, cut open 7 packets of Cholesterolmine, mix thoroughly and drink. I can't take other meds because they become ineffective.

Dr. Gresham informed me the pills were big. I remember them as small when I was hospitalized. Do y'all know about the pill form? Thanks, Dottie
