Acute Bronchitis

Post by jbrohlr »

Hello All,

The last 8 days I have been dealing with a case of acute bronchitis. Thankfully, I'm on the mend, but it appears the watery stools are returning.

The only medications I have taken for this bronchitis is nasal spray, Tylenol (generic), and reluctantly, Sudaphed (so I could get some sleep). I don't like taking Sudaphed because it raises my BP and seems to inflame or enlarge my prostrate gland (based on my urine stream). I'm off the meds as of today.

I did a search on this site for bronchitis and there was a lot of discussions about what to avoid as far as medications but I was wondering if the bronchitis itself can cause bowel inflammation. Thought I read somewhere about respiratory viruses causing systemic inflammation which will ramp up MC symptoms. Perhaps bronchitis can cause a MC flare up indirectly through all the phlegm getting down the esophagus (tried to cough up and spit out most of it but was not always successful), or maybe the virus using up stored vitamin D. I have been taking 5000iu a day of D3. I'm sure I have missed a couple of doses during this illness - not thinking clearly for a couple of the sick days.

Anyhow, I'm hoping someone has run into this problem before and can shed some light on what I can expect (or do about it). Still on restrictive diet.

Thanks,
John

the body being inflamed and the immune system being triggered will make it more overactive will cause gut issues

There is a mayo clinic study that talks about using high dose Vitamin D3 when you have the flu to prevent bronchitis
I have done doses of 20,000 iu per day for 3 days when I had bad flu

I would definitely encourage you to increase the Vit D3 to a min of 10,000iu whilst you are poorly.
If you can increase Zinc and Vit C this will also help the immune system clear what is going on

A colleague of mine and I have introduced vitamin D at doses that have achieved greater than 100 nmol/L in most of our patients for the past number of years, and we now see very few patients in our clinics with the flu or influenzalike illness. In those patients who do have influenza, we have treated them with the vitamin D hammer, as coined by my colleague. This is a 1-time 50 000 IU dose of vitamin D3 or 10 000 IU 3 times daily for 2 to 3 days. The results are dramatic, with complete resolution of symptoms in 48 to 72 hours. One-time doses of vitamin D at this level have been used safely and have never been shown to be toxic.8
