Lactose free issue

Post by dianebarkeridaho »

Hi all,

I did try to find this info first. Just diagnosed.

I am going gluten free and dairy free first. I did pretty well for a few days. Then I read about Lactose free milk. I tried that in coffee. That day the poops were ok. Then two nights ago I had some pesto on gluten free pasta. The pesto I now see had Asiago Cheese in it. But my goodness, I probably only had a few tablespoons of pesto which would amount to maybe a tablespoon of Asiago. Could this or the lactose free whole milk cause problems? I realize this is a short experiment.

Thanks all.

Hello Diane,

If you're sensitive to casein, like most of us, then the problem could be both of those foods. Any time the intestines are inflamed, we began to lose the ability to produce normal amounts of digestive enzymes. The first one we lose is lactase, so we become lactose intolerant, and if that were the only problem, lactose-free milk might work. But our biggest problem with dairy products, at least for most of us, is that we are also casein intolerant. Casein is the primary protein in milk, so it's found in all, and I do mean all, dairy products. Soft cheese has relatively low amounts of casein, although that's still plenty to cause us to react, if we're casein sensitive. Hard cheese is loaded with casein. While lactose will cause us to have diarrhea, our immune system does not produce antibodies against lactose, so that's a minor problem. Our immune system does produce antibodies against casein, and that causes the inflammation that triggers MC.

When our immune system produces antibodies against a food, it only takes a very tiny amount of that food to cause us to react, only a crumb, in most cases, so we have to be very diligent with our diet, and totally avoid all our food sensitivities. Also, please be aware that our sensitivity to gluten is so potent that gluten typically overwhelms reactions to other foods, so that until we get enough of the residual antibodies against gluten out of our system, reactions to other foods may be difficult to even detect. After about a month or so of avoiding gluten (the actual time varies by the individual), most of us are able to begin detecting reactions to other foods much more consistently/accurately.

I hope this helps.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Tex,

Thank you. That helps a lot. I had seen "casien" talked about here. But forgot all about it when I read other gluten free sites. I need to stick on this site. I guess we all are just special people.
