pickled foods improved symptoms?

Post by hey ya'll »

Hello!

My mom and I both have MC. She has been more willing than me to accept her symptoms and has not done much to try to improve. But yesterday she called to tell me that, just because she enjoys them, she has been eating tons of pickled vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, celery, peppers, cucumbers, beets) and sauerkraut and her symptoms have improved significantly! She was eating small amounts daily, but as she saw symptoms improving she has increased her daily pickled veggies to quite a lot and her MC symptoms are better than ever!

What in the world? Does this indicate a stomach acid problem? Of course I would love to piggyback off her accidental discovery - should I take apple cider vinegar, Betaine HCI? Or eat lots of pickled veggies?

Thank you for any insights on this! I hope you all are well!

Her improved symptoms are almost surely due to an improvement in her microbiome (gut bacteria). Unfortunately, we're all so different that it's not often that exactly what works for one, will work for another. That said, the secret to reaching remission with difficult cases that don't respond to normal treatment, is to try something else, when what you're doing now doesn't work, after giving it a good try.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Howdy! I eat a lot of pickled foods myself and notice an improvement in my own health, but I do have a small bacterial infection in my microbiome. Serratia marcescens is present in my gut, and since I'm unable to have a type of antibiotic that kills it off, I eat a lot of probiotic rich foods. I enjoy a kombucha daily too--but only ones that use fruit sugar, not cane sugar or honey.
