Test Results Shocked Me!

I just received my results from Entero lab testing and I am in shock! I would like some support and suggestions for how to proceed since all of you have been where I am. I have MLC. It is currently active.

Anit-Gliadin 57 units
Anti-Casein 28 units
Anti-ovalbumin 59 units
Anti-soy 16 units
Mean value 22 units

Significant reactivity: corn, chicken, almond
Moderate reactivity: oat, beef, pork, tuna, cashew
Some reactivity: rice
Insignificant reactivity: walnut & potato

It looks to me like the only things I can eat are coconut milk, lamb, seafood, turkey, wild game, vegetables, and fruit. I don't like wild game. My MLC is active so I'm eating very little fruit. Just a couple bites at dinner. Do I have to eliminate all the above foods for the rest of my life or once I'm in remission can slowly add back things from the moderate reactivity list & rice a little bit at a time as long as I don't over do it?

The sad thing is I leave on a two week Mediterranean cruise in six days. I'm going to begin a month of budesonide. 3 tabs a day for 2 weeks, 2 tabs a day for 2 weeks, and then 1 tab a day for 2 weeks. I know I won't be able to control my food choices so I hope that makes the cruise doable. Am also taking the usual anti-diarrhea meds.

Hi,

Welcome to the group.I'll try to answer your questions. Those first four allergens, gluten, all dairy products, chicken eggs, and soy, will probably be permanent sensitivities. Whether or not the others will, will depend on how well you heal, and that will depend on how meticulously you're able to maintain your diet. In addition to the foods you mentioned, other meat options are domestically raised cabrito (young goat), ducks, geese, rabbits, and emus, for example. You might be able to eat rice as long as you don't eat it every day. Sweet potatoes are also a good option for most of us along with turnips, carrots, beets, etc. Unless you were allergic to shellfish before you developed MC, you should be able to safely eat all shellfish, such as clams, mussels, oysters, shrimp, prawns, lobsters etc.

my initial thoughts are the gluten result is quite high

how long have you been gluten free?
are you getting contamination, ie are there others eating gluten in the household?



in regards to adding in the food items in the moderate area down the track - this 'kinda depends'.
Foods are not our only inflammation triggers, so if most of the non food triggers are not in your life, then you may be able to have some of those moderate food items.

in my eating plan I have
staples ( I can eat them every day)
sometimes foods (no more than 3 serves a week)
treats (one serve every 8-12 weeks)

whether I have sometimes foods or treats depends on many factors
if there is additional stresses, or my immune system is fighting something, or I am overtired, then I will stick to staples
Life with MC is about listening to your body. There is no black and white science that works everybody.

Thanks, Tex and Gabes! I appreciate your prompt responses and I'm so thankful I found this website and group. I've learned a lot by reading through many of the posts.

Tex, where do you find some of the meats you mentioned? I sure haven't noticed goat, rabbit, or any of the other meats at my local grocery store or even Sprouts or Natural Grocer.

I have ordered B12 and magnesium supplements and already take vitamin D. What dosages do you recommend for the magnesium and B12? I read some of the articles about vitamins and have order the type suggested but am not sure how much to take.

One more question. Can I eat the yoke of a hardboiled egg?

If you can't locate rabbit meat at a local farmers market, you can always order it online. Here's a link on Amazon, for example:

For cabrito, or goat meat, you should be able to Google it and come up with both local and online sources. For example, here's what a search brings up, for my area (Central Texas):

Or go to markets that cater to Middle East tastes — goat is their first choice. And markets that cater to Southeast Asians feature goat meat.

Most of us have our own opinions of how much magnesium we should take, usually based on how much works best for us. so here's my opinion:

if you ordered Doctor's Best Brand of Magnesium Glycinate, one tablet with or after each meal should be a good place to start. If it seems to cause diarrhea, back off on the dose, or switch to topical treatments with magnesium oils or lotions. For B-12,around 1000 or 2000 mg may be adequate, but over half of us have methylation issues, and most of us take a product by Thorne Laboratories called Methyl Guard Plus that contains the active (methylated) forms of vitamins, and it contains 3 mg of methylcobalamin (the active form of vitamin B 12). I've taken one capsule per day of Methyl Guard Plus for many years now, and it's worked fine for me.

Thorne Laboratories also offers a version called Methyl Guard (no plus), that contains about half of of the amount in each of the vitamins in Methyl Guard Plus. Some members here use that. The cheap form of vitamin B12 is cyanocobalamine, and those of us with methylation issues have trouble converting that to the active form so that our body can use it. So some of us take the active forms of the B vitamins just to make sure that our bodies can actually use the vitamins.

I would avoid eggs for now
some people are able to tolerate things like duck eggs or quail eggs
I think one of the reasons for this is that ducks and quail do better on free ranging - minimal grain feed


For me, I react to eggs that are fed high amounts of soy/gluten based feed.
I am lucky here in Australia that free range eggs (minimal grain fed) are very affordable.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your egg yolk question. Shame on me. To add to what Gabes posted,although it's the albumen in eggs that causes us to react, your anti-ovalbumen test result is so high, that I don't see any possible way that you could separate the yolks without getting more than enough ovalbumen to react.

Thanks for coming back to address the egg yolk question.

Gabes, I'd only been gluten free for a week prior to the test so that's why it's so high.

I've decided to start a food, meds, & supplements journal so I can track what I'm eating and taking and how I'm feeling. This way I can look back on it and see patterns that may be helpful.

I drink unsweetened ice tea in the summer and tap water with CO2 to make it fizzy. 1 cup of black coffee in the morning. I've just added ginger tea which is hot water with 1 1/2 tsp. of pure ginger juice added and a little bit of honey. This seems very soothing on my gut. I also have an occasional Diet Coke.That's about it lately.

You're lucky if the diet coke doesn't cause you to react, because looking at its ingredients:

CARBONATED WATER, CARAMEL COLOR, ASPARTAME, PHOSPHORIC ACID, POTASSIUM BENZOATE (TO PROTECT TASTE), NATURAL FLAVORS, CITRIC ACID, CAFFEINE:

Caramel color, aspartame, potassium benzoate, and natural flavors can cause some/many of us to react, and significant amounts of citric acid cause almost all of us to react, unless we've been in remission for a while.

Diet Coke in the amount I drink doesn't seem to cause any problems. One thing to be thankful for since I enjoy one every once in awhile.
