Suffering from Proctalgia Fugax

Post by Cran3 »

Hi all. I’ve been on a good kick for a while with my CC, but Saturday morning I’ve noticed an intense pain in my anal canal. I went to urgent care with the thought that I might have hemorrhoids, and I received a prostate exam where they said everything checks out ok except I may have something called proctalgia fugax. I’m going to see my doctor tomorrow, but the pain has been horrible. I'm even having trouble sleeping. Does anyone else deal with this? Of course, as research is scarce, I haven’t found much of this correlating with MC, but I’m sure there’s some connection given its symptoms. Would love to know if I’m not alone in this. Lol. Thank you in advance.

I've never heard of it before, and I don't recall seeing any posts here about it over the years, but of course that doesn't prove anything.

Googling it, I notice that it's a diagnosis determined by exclusion (meaning that it's the default diagnosis if no other cause can be found), so there's a very good chance that the doctor who gave you that diagnosis was simply unable to find the actual cause of the symptoms. A scan might pinpoint the problem. I hope this helps.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I have had this pain for years even before I had LC. It is terrible. It comes and goes. I had a gastroenterologist tell me years ago he also has it and there is nothing you can do for it. I take enemas and get some relief. Mine usually hits during the middle of the night. Fortunately mine never lasts very long and it seems I have it less and less as I get older.

I wish you well because it is painful.

Stephen,

You are not alone.

I have/had pelvic floor dysfunction and the rectal pain was excrutiating.

The rectal pain was so bad that i couldn't sit for months. Had to be driven in a car, while i laid in the back.

It took 2 whole years of pelvic floor physical therapy to get on the other side. I was just diagnosed with MC at the time, so it was an avalanche of issues all at once. I'm older, im 62, you may recover faster? They said it is most certainly connected with my GI issues.

Its a long, painful journey, but you can recover with preseverance, patience and determination.

If i were you when you see your doctor tomorrow, get a referral to pelvic floor physical therapy, its the only way i was able to heal and live normally again.

Good luck, Stephen

Jen
