Low Morale After GI Visit

Hi all,

I've been a member here for years; I mostly just browse other people's posts. I deal with CC and manage it quite well, but I recently developed a perianal abscess. At first they thought it was hemorrhoids, then proctaglia fugax, and finally landed on the abscess. I just had it removed last Saturday night and am now healing, but I got my procedure done in the ER instead of my GI doctor.

My GI doctor had little to no insight on the whole thing because it wasn't done by him or his team--and the ER has yet to send him the surgery info. I went in for a checkup this morning. He talked at me versus having an actual conversation, and he didn't ask clarifying questions about how I've been doing or feeling. My hope was that he and I could talk first, then he could simply do an examination of the outside where the open wound is healing to tell me if I'm doing things right; but instead, he did an internal anal examination and caused me an immense amount of pain. I wasn't mentally prepared for that. He said he thinks I could have Crohn's despite not seeing any of my bloodwork or surgery notes from the ER, and he wants me to start Budesonide again despite my bowel movements being fine. He said he thinks it's odd for me to be 29 years old with Microscopic Colitis; and then added in that Microscopic Colitis may develop into Crohn's. He just assumed he knew what was going on and spent about five minutes with me before leaving the room and having the nurse discharge me.

I really just wanted to have a little place to vent. This whole ordeal has me upset. I held all of my anger in until I got off at my bus stop and started crying on the rest of my walk home. I'm definitely going to switch doctors, but I just wish these things didn't feel like an uphill battle.

Vent away -
it is a sad reality of the current day health system - specialists dont have the time to care.
the health system is not set up to support people with these types of health issues

and hence it is one of the main reasons this website exists, people needing help and guidance where the health system has failed them.

Finding a knowledgeable supporting practitioner (GP, specialist, functional practitioner) is rare.
Based on my health journey about 1 in 50 are worth the money and have actually helped me heal and get my life back.

Our risk of developing Crohn's disease is no higher than anyone in the general population. Having MC does not increase the risk of developing Crohn's disease. I agree with Gabes. You've sized your gastroenterologist up correctly — he's a blowhard who appears to be doing a poor job of treating patients. He would probably be happier in some other line of work, where he didn't have to interact with other people.

Thank you, both. I appreciate the support. I’ve got a new doctor in mind and am going to call and schedule an appointment with him. He’s a little booked out, which is inconvenient considering I just had surgery and wanted someone sooner, but I think this is the best-case scenario. I can only do my best and let the rest follow suit.
