What type of magnesium are you taking, and what brand is it?

That looks like a good product to me, and yes, that should be an adequate dose unless something is severity depleting your magnesium. I can't remember everyone's treatment, so I apologize, but are you taking any medications such as cortisol, or a corticosteroid?

Have you had your cortisol levels checked, to see if your adrenals are overactive? The only other possibility I can think of is your zinc copper ratio. Your zinc level might be too low. If either of those are not the problem, your anxiety is probably caused by poor quality sleep.

no i have not had my cortisol levels checked. I dont feel like im chronically stressed but perhaps i have underlyig stress. I will look into this.

I take 15mg zinc a few times a week.. i also eat a lot of meat so would pressume im ok on zinc .i dont take copper. I would love a full blood work panel but the NHS over here is very reluctant to do these as its not essential.

one thing i wondered was potassium .. perhaps im low . Is there a relationship between magnesium and potassium? does one deplete the other?

Thanks tex

According to WebMD:
If you have really high or low levels of electrolytes like sodium or potassium, it can cause anxiety or panic-like symptoms. These include shortness of breath, confusion, and rapid heartbeat. You might also be irritable, lightheaded, fatigued, or have headaches or nausea.
I can remember an occasion when my mother had a potassium deficiency. She had many of the symptoms listed above, but she was so irritable and belligerent that we practically had to force her to see a doctor.

Back when I first started reacting, before I had any idea of what was going on, I remember having to go to the emergency department a couple of times, because my symptoms were so bad. I recall being diagnosed with anemia, dehydration, and a potassium deficiency, but I don't recall whether I had anxiety symptoms, or felt "wired".

Hi Tex
Thats interesting about your mother.. Why do you think she was so deficient in pottassium ?
After so investigation i dont think im low although i hope im not. I checked my bloods from a few months ago and my levels were normal if a little low. I eat a fair amount of greens and bananas so figured i should be ok.

Do you supplement with pottassium if you have a limited diet?

I also started taking 15mg selenium and noticed it helped a little with my gut.. maybe a paradox but interesting. I think it supports thyroid function.

I wanted to ask you about nutrient absorbtion and how you could tell if you were not absorbing properly.. would there be any major signs ? Does leaky gut contribute to malabsorbtion?

Hope all is well!

I'm doing well, thanks.

I'm convinced my mother had celiac disease. Her doctors never tested her for it, and back in those days, I had never heard of celiac disease. Back then, the older generations never talked about bowel habits. That simply wasn't an acceptable subject for polite conversation, so I'm sure she never told her doctors that she spent way too much time in the bathroom every day. I inherited the main celiac gene, (DQ2) from one of my parents, and surely it was her. That's why she was frequently low in potassium, and probably other electrolytes that her doctors never tested her for.

I take a lot of supplements, but not potassium. I eat a banana every day, and occasionally potatoes, and I've never tested low since about 20 years ago, when I changed my diet to eliminate gluten.

Re: nutrient malabsorption: Rapid motility (diarrhea) causes malabsorption of nutrients. Secretory (watery) diarrhea causes severe nutrient malabsorption. Yes, leaky gut (increased intestinal porosity) contributes to malabsorption. Leaky gut is caused by chronic inflammation, and leaky gut leads to the development of food sensitivities which then perpetuate the inflammation, and the diarrhea.

If you're losing weight, although your calorie intake is normal, and you're not burning extra calories with work or exercise, you have nutrient malabsorption. I hope this helps.

I find it hard to tell.. 90 percent of the time im ok. Semi normal stool, sometimes a little loose. 1 BM a day. occasional bloating or discomfort .
I have lost a little weight over the last 6 months but i feel i needed to ..so feel this is because of a healthier diet etc. My hair has been thinning also but cant say if this gut/nutrient related or just age.

Based on your description of your symptoms, I would guess that you still have some degree of inflammation, but malabsorption is probably only a minor problem at this point. And as you point out, most of us are eating a much lower calorie diet then we did before we reluctantly became acquainted with MC.

Incidentally, although it's not common, some of us develop a zinc deficiency because of our diet changes, and a zinc deficiency can cause hair loss.

Yes i take zinc 15mg from time to time.

I feel i sometimes have a more inflamed gut when im stressed. Generally thats when i have more bloating, unless i ate something like cabbbage. This leads me to think i have a more 'nervous gut'... im curious about the vagus nerve and its relation to the gut.
I think im at a stage of this disease when ive made good improvements but still at the final hurdle . Its been 3 years since i was diagnosed. I rarely have urgency or WD. perhaps once every 10months . Perhaps im still just healing a bit. Im 35

Well, stress definitely causes inflammation, and the crucible vegetables, including cabbage, cause the generation of gas when digested.

The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system. The enteric nervous system controls the digestive system, and it's connected to the central nervous system by way of the vagus nerve. However, the enteric nervous system operates Independently, and can even function when severed from the vagus nerve.

if you no longer have urgency, and have symptoms only every 10 months or so, yes you've definitely done some significant healing.

Hi Tex hope your welll

The last few weeks ive been having altered strange bowel /stool .. Without being too graphic when i go to the loo i have gernerally formed stool followed by unformed .. almost like half and half.. not watery but loose. The colours are also different . This is durign one BM btw. wondered whatyou thought might be causing this as have not changed my diet . Stress? I was thinking it must be moltilty ...

Also i was thinking last night, would you describe MC as an autoimmune condition? sorry this has probably been asked a million times.

Thanks!

That bowel pattern is somewhat common for those of us who are almost in remission, and the color and texture change is indeed due to increased motility. If you're coming out of a reaction, the symptoms should improve as you heal. If you're falling out of remission, something in your diet is apparently being contaminated.
