Pepto Regime-when will it kick in?

Post by Anna23 »

Hi there!

I’ve been newly diagnosed with LC, but have been suffering for nearly 5 years. While I feel relief to finally know what’s going on, I’m also extremely overwhelmed and confused about how to get it under control.

GI has started me on the pepto regimen of 9 pills a day for 8 weeks. I just started 4 days ago but still have no improvement of diarrhea. Stomach pains have went away though so I’ll take that. How long before this starts to work? I know I’m early in treatment but I was hoping for things to start changing soon.

Also, GI said I don’t need to change my diet that things should resolve after this treatment…

Thanks for your help! Happy to find people going through this same issue.

In the original treatment trials, the average time to remission was approximately two weeks. Please be aware that your gastroenterologist is mistaken, unless you are totally avoiding gluten, at the very least, you will almost surely relapse after the treatment is ended.

Good luck with the treatment.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you Tex! I have been following a gluten free diet since discovering this forum. I hope to do all I can to prevent relapse.

Hi, Anna. I'm a Pepto success story, but I can't remember how long it took. It's been 10 years for me. Your GI is wrong in telling you not to change your diet. Mine was the same, "gluten free is a fad." But I found this great group & read Tex's book & I've been in remission for 10 years. It is possible without medication. I am totally gluten, dairy & soy free along with the other recommendations you'll find on here. Best wishes on your journey to healing.

Thank you so much for your reply! I just finished week 2 today and things have calmed down so much. Im so happy to hear that one can be in remission for so long like yourself. I need to get a little better with the diet, I have been gluten free for a few weeks but think I should add in the dairy/soy. So thankful to have found this community and that there is hope. It’s crazy to think I was suffering for years when there was a solution so simple out there. My family doc wasn’t much help in the beginning but finally got an answer once I seen my GI. Wish my GI was better informed about the diet, but happy I have this community for support and suggestions.

Hi, Anna. So glad that it seems to be working for you! I felt the same as you in the beginning. We just don't know how the D can end and we'll feel human again. This group is the absolute best! We just returned from 5 days at the beach. I took breakfast & lunch along & dinner for two evenings. We dined out for three evenings. I don't like to eat out that often, but I did it for my husband. I was very careful with what I ordered and I was okay. I had never eaten at a Lucky Bones before. They gave me an orange napkin & menu & my dinner was served on an orange plate. They want all of their staff to know to be careful! The food choices weren't all that great for MC, though. We have to watch so much more than just gluten. I had a pork chops, (I don't eat pork very often), steamed broccoli and whipped sweet potato which I'm thinking probably had some type of dairy in it, but I'm not sure.
I hope you have another great week!
