Interesting story. I noticed that the author never tracked down his food sensitivities. What do you want to bet that he's sensitive to gluten?
And his inability to fully inhale, sometimes — I've experienced that. It's a symptom of chronic magnesium deficiency (also suggesting that he's gluten sensitive). With a chronic magnesium deficiency, sometimes our diaphragm is unable to normally expand, and that can limit the size of the breaths that we're able to draw.
The author might be an accomplished science writer, but he obviously has difficulties tracking down the actual cause of his problems, and that probably is due to the fact that he relies 100% on published medical research data, as interpreted by his doctors. He doesn't think out of the box, consequently he can't resolve problems that his doctors are unable to resolve.
