Hi gabes!

Thanks for you insight . I will have a look at dave aspreys podcasts and see how i go. Ive started breathing exercises which help lower my blood pressure and generally help with sleep. I also invested in theanine . im nt sure if it helps yet but its interesting stuff.

I wanted to ask you guys something about magnesium actually... I read recently that some people can be intolerant to magnesium supplements!? Is this even true or possible? Apparently symptoms can be insomnia , anxiety etc. Im not reffering to citrate or any of the laxative versions. Just a general mag intolerance. I find this mad as most people are so deficient ..

I didn't have time to check the link you listed, but here's the complicated part of a chronic magnesium deficiency: magnesium and insulin are codependent — magnesium enhances insulin function, and insulin is required in order to store magnesium within the cells of the body, similar to other nutrients. A long-term chronic magnesium deficiency can lead to insulin resistance, and even frank diabetes. If that happens, then insulin is unable to transport magnesium from the blood to the cells where it's needed. The net result of this is that rebuilding magnesium supplies can be excruciatingly slow, and as long as it persists, insulin resistance remains in effect. This will apply not only to magnesium supplements, but magnesium in food, also. Only after magnesium reserves eventually become reasonably well restored (above a certain threshold), can insulin resistance be reversed, and normal digestive system functioning resume.

Note that this does not imply that someone has become intolerant of magnesium supplements. The inability to absorb magnesium (in either supplemental form, or in food) is the result of insulin resistance.

I hope I haven't just confused the issue.

Not confusing at all. Very helpful in fact and makes a lot of sense.

Im hoping im not insulin resistant.. i havnt consumed sugary foods for years and have also been taking 3-400mg magnesium for last 2 years since developing MC. There must be something to do with quality too.

Stupid question, but is there an obvious marker or sign for when you have replenished magnesium stores in the body? without blood testing that is...

You've probably at least surpassed a minimum magnesium reserve threshold when you:
  • Don't have any leg or foot cramps during the wee hours of the morning while you're trying to sleep
    Don't have any gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) problems
    Don't have frequent muscle cramps, spasms, or tremors (during the day)
    Don't have constant fatigue and weakness
    Don't frequently catch colds, or other viruses
    Don't have low appetite
    Don't have dry, scaly skin
    Don't have abnormal heart rhythms
Remember that MC can cause fatigue for up to two years after remission from diarrhea is achieved (in other words, until some substantial intestinal healing has occurred).

I dont have most of those symptoms so would hope im on the good side of magnesium . i very rarely get spasms or twitches but usually thats when im stressed.

I suppose ive been taking magnesium glycinate for 2-3 years now so would probably know if it didnt suit me! Does the glycine have any affect if taking for a long time??
