Possible Setback

Post by jbrohlr »

Hello All.

The last four days I have had a slow decline in my gut behavior, culminating with an incident of WD this morning. I have not had WD or even as much as a significantly loose stool for over 4 months. I thought I'd list the possible causes to see if anyone sees an issue.

Last week I re-seasoned my frying pan with avocado oil. I tried to eat a small piece of avocado a year and a half ago and had a bad reaction to it the next day (possibly a coincidence though as I was very sensitive at the time).

I changed brands of coconut oil. The container does not list anything but coconut oil as an ingredient. I only use coconut oil to grease my pan.

My staple is lamb cuts (and sweet potatoes). The last week I have been using more ground lamb though. The ground lamb I have been using is from WalMart. It does not list any other ingredient other than lamb. I'm beginning to wonder if there are ingredients in ground meats that companies get away with not listing because I even had a problem with ground turkey (that had no preservatives listed).

I went two days without cholestyramine. The issue with cholestyramine is that for many months I have been only taking a half a dose before bed every night on the premise that overnight is the only time much bile can build up (I don't have a gall bladder). I'm eating during the day, so I've assumed the bile is being used up during that time. The watery stool this morning did not have that odd yellowish tint that I experienced in the past, so don't know about BAM. That and the subtle decline in gut performance seemed to predate the cholestyramine cessation.

Had a kidney stone pass 5 days ago, but I had a whopper of a stone pass three months ago (even passed out) and it really did not have an effect on my gut then. I took Tylenol for the pain.

May have had a slight cold 3 or 4 days ago. The fact that I'm not sure I had a cold makes me dismiss that as a cause. Viruses cause inflammation though.

If anyone has an idea/opinion on this setback I'd appreciate the input

Thanks,
John R.

John

sometimes it only takes two minor changes to cause MC'ers issues

The avocado oil, with the change to ground meat, the reduced intake of the cholestryamine along with your immune system fighting virus / germs would most likely be the cause.

In my early stages of healing, change in routine or drinking tap water from a different source was enough to cause a change in my poop.
With time and healing I am no longer that sensitive

Hope things are better the next day

Regarding the problems you report with ground meats: I have a hunch that this problem may depend on the butcher — in other words, it may depend on how well he (or she) cleans the grinder when changing meat, or even if he (or she) bothers to clean the grinder when changing from one meat to another. If you happen to buy meat that was ground soon after the butcher switched over from another meat, you might get a cross contaminated batch.

If the reaction continues, I would experiment with adding the Colestyramine back into my routine.

Thank you Gabes and Tex.

Here on out I am avoiding ground meat (unless I grind it myself, which won't happen).

Unfortunately, I did not differentiate in my log on what form of lamb I ate (or form of turkey). If it's cross-contamination though there might not be a pattern anyway.

One question on the possible cold virus. I've realized that since I started down this journey almost two and a half years ago I have not had any demonstrable cold symptoms nor any sinus headaches (which is why I overused aspirin). The times I thought I might have a cold the symptoms only lasted a day. Do others on this site have reduced cold symptoms due to ingesting vitamin D3? I thought maybe my lack of respiratory infections was due to being isolated (mostly because of MC).

It's difficult to say with any certainty, but it's certainly possible that the vitamin D could be making a difference in your resistance to colds. We have one member (Polly) who reported that she always had polyps discovered during colonoscopy exams. After she began taking significant doses of vitamin D, her next colonoscopy was free from polyps, and she attributed that to the vitamin D (Polly is a pediatrician).

I have fewer colds and viruses these days too, but as you say, that might just be because of more isolation, so I can't just claim that's due to the vitamin D, although I suspect it may well be. Since I changed my diet and achieved remission, I've had one headache in almost 20 years, and that was because I bumped my head on an overhead metal frame, because I wasn't watching my business while inspecting some machinery. Prior to that, I had headaches about as often as most people.
