Recommendations for GF/SF personal care items (makeup, lotions, SPF, etc.)
With so many of us on a strict gluten and soy-free diet, I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations to share for personal care items that don't contain either.
There are so many ingredients in which soy can hide (glycerin, tocopherols, etc), so it'd be great to share knowledge on some of the products we've found. I've had to throw out SO many items and still haven't found replacements for all of them.
So far, some of the safe products I've found are:
- Gabriel Cosmetics: entirely gluten and soy-free. Good for lip liner, foundation, etc.
- Kabana Skincare: Green Screen Organic Sunscreen SPF 31 Tinted Soy Free. Their magnesium lotion is also great.
- Green Beaver (maybe only available in Canada?). Their glycerin etc is not soy-derived, I had to email and ask. I use their lotions and soap.
- Indie Lee: squalene facial oil derived from olives.
I'm still on the hunt for recommedations for safe skincare, shampoos/conditioners, etc.
If you have any favorite products, I'd love to know what they are! Thanks.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Tex! I have, thank you for the link. Most of those discussions are fairly dated and companies tend to reformulate their products every few years, so was hoping for some more recent recommendations...

I hear you. And on top of that, the FDA temporarily relaxed some of their labeling rules during the pandemic while certain ingredients were difficult to acquire, so there's a chance that many products on the shelves don't have a completely accurate label. So you're right, we have to be especially careful about unexpected label changes.

Hi Audrey! Thanks for these recommendations. I am just starting to look at products as I only received my enterolab results this week, so I don’t have anything to share yet, but I will pass them on when I do. I had a significant response to almond (it was a 3 with mean 24) so I am wondering if I need to worry about almond oil as well. I was putting it on my dry fingernails every night. Lots to think about!

Hi Jane! Thanks for your response. Yes, you should try to avoid almond oil if that's a trigger for you, just in case your fingers touch your mouth, as we so often do unconsciously.
Jojoba oil is a really nice alternative, it is very similar to the oils your skin naturally produces and it sinks in very well (it's more expensive than almond oil but you can find 100% pure jojoba at Homesense and Winners, etc). I put it on straight out of the shower when my skin is still damp.

Thanks, Audrey! I will give jojoba oil a try. In some of my searches for ingredient in products, a tool called Skinsafe appears which lists allergens in products. With it I learned that Clinique lipsticks are not only gluten free but also soy soy free. I looked up a couple of Ulta makeup products I purchased a few months back and was pleased to find they are not only inexpensive, but also free of allergens. One is Ulta Beauty Foundation Moisturizing Foundation Stick and the other is Ulta Too Cheeky Lip and Cheeks stick. I don’t wear heavy makeup and I don’t like to send time putting it on, so these two work well for me.
