Is my collagen powder the cause of my flare up?

Post by Bloater »

I started taking collagen powder (Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides) about three weeks ago. I take two tablespoons a day—spread out—which is half the recommended dosage. I first noticed my stomach bloating A LOT, then the gurgling, and then watery diarrhea (about 2-3 times per day). Around the same time, I also started taking some other supplements (DHEA 10mg, Methyl B Complex, Tru Niagen Pro 500). None of these supplements seem to tend to cause bloating or diarrhea, so I assumed it might be the collagen. I'm stopping the collagen powder today. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to the group. It sure sounds as though your hunch is correct, regarding the cause of the bloating. In general, we've found that avoiding supplements other than magnesium and vitamin D, until after we've been in remission for a while is much safer, and usually gets us to remission much faster, with fewer setbacks.

Thank you for your response. Regarding magnesium, I typically stay away from it because it seems to cause diarrhea whether or not I'm having a flare-up. Is that wrong? If so, what type of magnesium and how much would I take? I hear great things about magnesium, but I am afraid to take it.

Members who tend to have diarrhea problems when taking oral magnesium supplements usually use magnesium oil or magnesium lotion rubbed liberally on their skin. Some soak in bath water for 15 or 20 minutes in which a cup of Epsom salts have been dissolved, two or three times per week. Some use foot soaks in which Epsom salts have been dissolved. I believe dermal patches might be available, but they're rather expensive (if they're available).
