Magnesium

Post by onebigpill »

I hear magnesium can be troublesome for many. Do I need to supplement magnesium if I test in the normal range?

Labs:
Magnesium normal range is 1.4 to 2.5 MG/DL. My result was 2.2.

Many thanks for your input.

Thanks for the input, Gabes! I was wondering about that too. So, even with a normal range result, I should still consider supplementing magnesium? I'll definitely check out that post in the guidelines to recovery. Appreciate the guidance!

there are multiple aspects to this

1. Current day testing is based on magnesium in the blood. Magnesium is not stored in blood
2. the 'ranges' for normal in the blood tests is based on a population that is mostly deficient in magnesium
3. if you are taking calcium - it depletes magnesium

The daily requirement (RDI) for magnesium is about 350mg for women and 420mg for men elemental magnesium per day.
There are food items, drinks, stress and medications that deplete magnesium so depending on various aspects some people need more than 350mg a day
If you are deficient in Magnesium then you will need more than 350mg elemental magnesium per day to help correct deficiency.

VERY IMPORTANT - to read label on products and confirm how much elemental magnesium is in each dose of the product you are taking
if taking oral tablets - spread the dose through the day - not all at once

I did NOT tolerate magnesium. Going to try soaking my feet to absorb a little, and maybe try supplements after more healing?

That sounds like a good plan. There's no point in taking oral magnesium supplements if they just cause diarrhea, because the additional diarrhea will cause you to lose not only most of the magnesium, but many of your other nutrients, two.
