Hello Tex,

So I struggle with understanding the timing of cholestyramine. I am doing intermittent fasting for general health reasons (eating 10:30am to 6pm). Taking the cholestyramine at bedtime works which I have started for 2 nites so far. It is an earlier dose that I am confused on .

In this thread someone said "been taking cholestyramine (2 scoops/sachets) once pd 45 mins after main meal for x3 weeks or so; am able to take other meds 3 hours after."

They are taking Cholestyramine 45 mins after main meal. I thought it has to be 4-6 hrs after? I am so confused.

If my first meal is at 10:30 am, second is at 12:30 and last is at 5:30 how can I get two doses of cholestyramine in?

Also how do people take 8 packets in a day? Not that I am doing that but curious. Do they take multiple doses 2x day or do they ignore the timing with meals and just spread it out thru the day?

Thank you so much for you help!

There are various ways to go about this. You can take cholestyramine any time you want, it's just that if you take it too soon before or after a meal, it will sequester some of the nutrients in that meal, and reduce your cholesterol level. It was originally labeled to be taken slightly before or with meals in order to lower cholesterol levels. So if you don't want to sequester any nutrients, or lower your cholesterol level, you need to take it at least a couple of hours before meals, or wait until at least three or four hours after a meal to take it. If your timing doesn't exactly match those limits, it won't be the end of the world if you fudge the timing somewhat. It's not like it's going to sequester all your nutrients, or drop your cholesterol levels to zero.

You're taking the guidelines too seriously. They're not chiseled in stone. We all respond to various medications differently, anyway, so the guidelines for taking virtually any medication can vary, because the results will be affected by our personal situation, including our weight, our metabolism, and various other pharmacokinetic properties of our body that affect the pharmacodynamics of the drug.

I hope this resolves your concerns.
