Going crazy!

Post by Mhdbeachgirl »

I was diagnosed with CC in Sept of 2021 by colonoscopy after having a couple years with intermittent WD episodes. I did the Entero Labs testing and all of my results were pretty high IgA 279, soy, dairy, eggs, chicken, tuna, white potato, white rice, walnuts, cashews, almonds, beef, pork. I have been eating turkey, lamb, sometimes fresh frozen venison, jasmine rice, yellow and red potatoes, carrots. I have found that the crucifers are somewhat problematic with gas and bloating even taking beano. About six weeks ago after a weekend away (mostly eating food I brought from home in a cooler with some restricted restaurant meals I am now in the midst of a flare, that no matter what I eliminate (I'm down to turnkey burgers, lamb burgers, yellow potato, and jasmine rice) every day or so i have a bout of WD with pain pretty soon after a meal. Can it be histamine intolerance? I do not have any rashes, but sneezing occasionally, some catarrh in my throat and a stuffy nose. I am not sick so these are a little odd. I have never had seasonal allergies in the past and live on the Atlantic coast. I've lost 50 lbs as of today from when I started the MC diet (I was 156 lbs and 5.0 ft) I'm hungry all the time and really lacking in energy. I use magnesium lotion twice a day and a transdermal patch at night. I also am bumping up my d3.
Don't know where to go from here. I have tried all the drugs. I was also on a prednisone taper 1.5 years ago for another flair (stress induced). Don't want to do that again! Help!

Hello Elizabeth,

As you have found, this disease occasionally seems to have a mind of its own, so it throws a fit. The problem could be histamine issues, because many of us have that problem. But I'm guessing it's more likely BAM. We've found that for MC patients who are diligent with their diet, and take all the necessary precautions, yet still have diarrhea that seems refractive to treatment, In most cases, the remaining link to the puzzle is BAM. Even if you've read this before, please carefully read the newsletter published by the Microscopic Colitis Foundation last January. It contains detailed instructions on how to use cholestyramine to achieve remission, when nothing else seems to work. For your convenience, here's a direct link where you can either read, or download a copy of that newsletter:

https://www.microscopiccolitisfoundatio ... mplate.pdf

Unfortunately, cholestyramine is currently in short supply (similar to many meds), but hopefully, you can find a pharmacy where it is available.

I hope this resolves the problem.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Elizabeth, sorry you are going through another flare.

Your problem does sound like BAM but I would not dismiss the idea that it is one of your o.k. foods that is causing the flare, either from cross contamination or a new sensitivity. The "it's always been o.k. before" thought has gotten me into trouble a couple of times. And I understand your frustration, the vigilance needed to avoid a flare can wear me down - especially when the vigilance does not seem to be helping.

I know most people here have no issue with white (jasmine) rice, but I had a bad reaction to it - flare lasted 6 weeks after I stopped eating it. Maybe stop eating rice for a while and see if you improve. If you don't then I apologize for wasting your time.

Thanks Tex and John. Good idea to stop the rice and see what happens. Only problem is that that is one of my travel foods since potatoes and carrots don’t freeze well on their own. But ever moving forward… Tex, I was on Cholestyramine before the flare a year and half ago which landed me in the hospital for a week. It seemed to work pretty well until it didn’t. But if the elimination of the Jasmine rice doesn’t help I will definitely give it another try. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to consider my question. You are a lifeline to all of us out here struggling with this condition. Bless you!
