Hello Everyone and thanks for your prays and your kind words at the moment you dont know how much they mean to me. It is really hard and i know what you are saying about detaching myself a little from my sister but it is so hard when she has always been there for me, and it is so hard to know if it is the brain damage of if she is just playing up but she is just so out of caracter. The doctors at the hospital she was in at first told us there was a lot of brain damage, but one minuet she seem herself then she is like a stranger and you think (where did that come from) and then you can say something to her and she looks right through you as if she does'nt know what you are talking about she is still very depressed although befor the stroke she never ever had a day,s depression in her life infact she has never had a day's illness. God it is so hard to understand. Momster you were right in thinking that the treatment here is not very good, she has been home from hospital now for 5 weeks and we still have'nt heard from any pysio personel, although we have someone private coming in once a week and i do exercise's with her every day. The hospital's here just seemed to give up on her because the damage was so bad and they were expecting her to have another massive stroke. I keep reading diferent things but it is hard on which root to take and how to treat her.

Anyway im sorry i have'nt had much time to catch up with the board i hope you are all well my prayers are with you all.

God Bless,
Love Bobbie.

Bobbie,

Thank you for your update.

I don't know if this information will be any help or not, but here are my thoughts:

Depression is very common for stroke victims. Her doctors should be giving her something to relieve the depression, because depression and anxiety lead to a much higher risk of a fatal stroke. The worse the depression and anxiety, the greater the risk.

I'm not telling you this to scare you, but to encourage you to try to persuade them to help her get rid of the depression. Exercise also helps to relieve depression, but she may need some medication to help control it. If she is already taking an anti-depressant, and it is not doing the job, the doctors should try some other medication, until they find one that will work, without adverse side effects.

The stroke apparently caused a bipolar disorder. Do you know if the stroke was in the left side of her brain, or the right side. (If one side of her body is paralyzed, the opposite side of her brain was affected).

The bipolar disorder can be successfuly treated with haloperidol and lorazepam. Show her doctors the information on this website, (you can print it out for them):

Bobbie, we're all thinking of you and your sister, and hoping and praying for the best. If the hospital will give you the right kind of help, your job will be a lot easier.

Take care of yourself.

Love,
Wayne

HI Bobbie,

It's good to hear from you again. I am keeping everything crossed for your sister's recovery. Please keep in mind that it can take up to a full year for neurological damage to heal. Of course, the healing will be maximized if she is getting the appropriate therapies - PT, OT, Speech, Psychiatry, etc. - whatever she needs. Perhaps you can serve as the "squeaky wheel" and DEMAND from your health system whatever it is that she needs. I'm thinking of you and sending a great big cyberhug....... :bigbighug:

Love,

Polly

I, too, have not forgotten nor will I forget what you are going through.
Be strong and I urge you again to try and take care of yourself also.
Try to check in when you can and let us know how you are and your sister too.
