It's a modified food starch made from starch that's derived from items such as corn, wheat, or potatoes. Whether or not it's an allergen depends on what it's made from. But it's an emulsifier, and published research shows that emulsifiers increase the risk of causing IBD. And in addition, tomato catsup is not safe if you're still reacting, because most of us react to significant amounts of citric acid until we're in stable remission.
