Hi all,
I hope you are all well.
I was not on the board for a while, because I am very good in remission. The last years it went clear that I have to stay on my strict diet, because otherwise I get problems. i realize more and more that this disease is very restrictive in many ways.
But now I have a new 'problem': fecal incontinence. My stools are most of the time ok and I don't have d, but when I am outside for some time for walking and shopping and I need to go to the toilet, I can only stop the urge for about a quarter of an hour. It gets worse and worse and in the end I can't stop it anymore. It happens more and more often. I've read on internet that this can happen by colitis and I made an appointment with my doctor. I also ordered some diapers....But I wonder if anyone recognizes this problem and do you have an advise?

Re: fecal incontinence
Hello Sonja,
I see that no one has responded. Apparently everyone else who is checking in these days has been fortunate enough to avoid that problem. But fecal incontinence is rather common with MC, unfortunately, and quite a few of us have that problem at one time or another. Most members refer to the problem as having an accident, so in the search bar at the upper right, I entered the word "accident" (without the quotes) and I got 708 hits that date all the way back to when this discussion board was created, 20 years ago. You can try it yourself, or click on the link that I've listed below, in order to view those old posts. The first five or six of them (the most recent) are about other types of accidents, but the farther you go back into the older posts, the more posts you will see that mention experiences with fecal incontinence.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Re: fecal incontinence
Hi Tex,
thanks for your reply. I also call it an accident and I looked at the hits. Then I searched for diaper and ......124 hits. I understand that many of us wear diapers and I understand that this can be necessary if you are not in remission, but being in remission and having normans and yet needing diapers....
while this was before never necessary, it is really a new fase in my journey.
I also read that people feel save with a diaper and I can imagine that. I will try it and experience it.

Re: fecal incontinence
I'm quite experienced in this area unfortunately and not trying to be weird or anything-but given that I used to ride my bike and or walk around my general neighborhood area (kinda rural, pine trees in Colorado) regularly...I'm probably the champion with having "accidents". Yes, "diapers" or Depends or the like definitely give you a little piece of mind-but they really won't completely save you !!! That's my experience at least. If theses episodes are becoming more frequent...I think that you need to tweak your routine a little. I never got 15 minutes worth of "hold" time if I had to go...more like a minute or two...

Re: fecal incontinence
Hi Laine,
Thank you for your answer. I am sorry to hear that you are so good in accidents.
I live in Amsterdam and I like to do my shopping by foot and there are not so many pine trees here....
I used to bike and that's much quicker, but the traffic is really terrible here. And I want to walk every day for my health / condition. So, it sounds like a luxury problem, I know.
I started with psyllium, because I read on the forum many good things about it. Maybe this helps.
Once again, thank you for your answer.
