Was my reflux really MC?
Good evening all. In 2021 for the first time I had severe repetitive belching which went on for three months, worse after eating. I had. No diarrhea at that time but I would have a tight feeling in my upper abdomen. (Epigastric region). I had a negative endoscopy and colonoscopy at that time. I was diagnosed with acid reflux but I did not have the acid symptoms at all, maybe once only. After PPI meds and time it totally went away until 2023 when the same thing happened again. This time I was able to relate it to overeating a meal at a diner of hamburger, pound cake, ice cream, French fries. Again it lasted for 2-3 months, no acid, no diarrhea, no nausea. Then in late 2024 the watery diarrhea started and my biopsy showed MLC. Do you think all this gas they came up as burps and belching was actually part of the MC or do you think it was a separate acid reflux without the acid? I know it’s hard to say but I’m wondering if anyone else experienced something like this. Thanks in advance.
Re: Was my reflux really MC?
I see no one has responded to your question, so I'll share my thoughts. Reflux is often caused by a failure of the pyloric sphincter to open properly to allow food to pass from the stomach into the duodenum. It's a relatively common problem with diabetes, for example. But the reason it occurs is typically because of a magnesium deficiency. Research shows that most diabetics are magnesium deficient. Without adequate magnesium, muscles can spasm, and fail to properly relax. When that happens with the pyloric sphincter, it prevents (or partially prevents) the chyme (partially digested food) from passing into the intestines. This can allow the chyme to ferment in the stomach, producing gas, which results in belching, and eventually leading to reflux issues. And eventually, of course, the chronic inflammation generated by the syndrome can lead to the development of MC.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
