pepto dosing and other questions

Post by cynthiaa »

Does anyone know the pepto treatment and dosing? I have read online but generally it involves the pepto pills and I was curious about the liquid?

Long story short: I think I am in a flare from antibiotics and Naproxen use. My doctor is not being very helpful. She did order stool tests but is basically telling me to take pepto and Imodium and bentyl as needed instead of assuming I am likely in a flare and treating me appropriately.

She did order one of those fecal calprotectin tests and I do not have the results yet but I was under the impression that sometimes it is not positive even in a flare. Does anyone else know? I am concerned that if this is negative she will just let me continue to be miserable with my diarrhea

She did order a SIBO test but only after I badgered her. I am not sure that is the case here and I am thinking this is an MC flare but I feel like she does not believe me. Can one have MC and SIBO at the same time?

Last year for my scope my biopsy was negative however she had treated me with Budesonide BEFORE the scope and i was taking the steroid right up to it (stopped maybe two days before). She keeps referring back to the scope being negative but honestly, i feel it was negative since i was treated before and just because it was negative then doesn't mean i am not in a flare now

Sorry for the rant but I feel like you all understand. I am miserable and living in the bathroom for the first hour when I wake, being awakened in the morning and I have terrible smelly gas. It greatly impacts my life and I feel unheard.

Can you change doctors?

regardless of doctors opinion and whether they call your issues MC or IBS
inflammation causes symptoms
reducing inflammation and healing is the way to get your life back

There is no quick fix for issues like MC, there is no one medication that works for everyone.
the best long term approach is diet and lifestyle changes to reduce inflammation and taking the right supplements to optimise the body healing.

have you made the suggested diet changes on the MC foundation site (and this site)
are you taking Vit D3 and magnesium?

Yes I have and I do take those things. I think I have some type of flare from the Naproxen and Antibiotics? I can change doctors although in a flare I dont want to because then it will be months before I can get treatment and I would have to wait to see someone new all together. but that is a wise suggestion because she is not listening to me.

Hello Cynthia,

Flares can sometimes be very difficult to resolve, as you've found. There's not much point in worrying about SIBO, because it will resolve by itself when you resolve the inflammation that's causing your MC flare. Most of us have SIBO when our MC is active.

If you want to try the Pepto treatment, the original treatment called for eight tablets per day (presumably spaced out during the day), for eight weeks. If you want to use the liquid form instead, you will need to calculate the equivalent dose.

I hope this helps,

Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi, Cynthia. I'm a Pepto success story. My GI recommended 2 tablets 4xday for 8 weeks. After a few weeks I became C so I reduced to 6/day. I took the tablets which I cut in 1/2 and took with water. Do not chew them or your tongue will turn black. I have not needed any medication nor have I had a major flare and it's over 10 years now. I read Tex's book & made the dietary changes recommended in the book & in this group. I don't cheat & I'll never have gluten or dairy again. My life is "normal" other than my diet. Good luck on your journey to healing.

thank you all for your help and advice. My doctor finally decided to treat me as my fecal calprotecin came back sky high so she finally believed me that I am in a flare up. She prescribed the budesonide and so far it is helping. I feel very silly for taking those antibioitcs and naproxen!
